Gave it a very solid shakedown this weekend down in wellsville ohio....all I can say is wow!!....this thing straight up works....need some odds and ends still but it will go.almost anywhere I point it

I had to winch that ledge...i hit it a couple times in first gear sort of easy and it tried to climb but wouldnt quit do it...i think if I would have grabed 2nd and hit it like I ment it it would have went up it....i did not do it since we were only half way through our first day and I did not want to chance it so I pulled cable...here is a 1 ton tj on 40's at the base of the ledge to give you some perspective of the size

That water fall was awsome...it was longer than my wheelbase, steep, and slippery as hell...it is a solid sheet of rock covered in muddy water...of the five in our group I was the only one to drive it without cable...started about 2' from the bottom and hit it 3rd gear, foot on the floor...what a rush!!!

Starting to plan for the rear coil conversion. I am happy with the front leaf springs but the rears suck. I am gonna do a triangulated 4 link with heims and coils. Simple, solid, nothing bling or fancy.

My question:

Do I stay with the standard 8" toyota rear axle or step up to the ff 9.5" fj80 rear? I would gain strength, discs and ff but parts are more money and I am not breaking what I currently have.

My thought is to step up since I want to do a 3.4 v6 swap in the future.

Bought everything I need to build a new rear dshaft out of 2 1/2" sched. 40 pipe (~.25 thick) since my current one is bent. Also picked up a new steering box since my current one was drilled / tapped for the hydro assist incorrectly by the po and I cannot keep it seeled.

Built the new drive shaft and put it in. Also took the old steering box out...apparently that thing is fucked lol. If I grab the input shaft with my hand I can turn it and turn the pitman arm. However if I grab the pitman arm I can not turn it...it is bound tight....that may explain why it steered funny and always leaked

I got a new box all drilled and tapped just gotta put it in.

Put the new steering box in....also took the old one apart...the worm gear in the input of the old one is 90% stripped....its a miracle it steered at all. Also buttoned up some loose ends and pulled the doors....ready for bundy sunday!

I plated and insured it the other day since there are times I may need to street drive it...i took it for a drive and much to my surprise it drives very nice...with some smaller, radial tires you could easily dd it, or drive it to and from wheeling events.

Gonna give everything a check over / retorque and then its off to windrock thursday.

Thumbs down

Checked it all over and it is all holding great. Everything is holding torque which is a big key to.keeping these axles alive with big tires....stuffs gotta stay tight. Did find a broken hub dial gear which dont surprise me...looks like drive flanges are in my future.

I would upgrade the rear axle if you do a 3.4 swap. The ring and pinion are not friendly with horsepower. Plus the width of the fj80 axle would be nice. I know a great place to purchase coil springs alot cheaper than most other places also.
BTW that place in Ohio looks incredible! What is the name of the place?

Smile

Spent friday / saturday wheeling windrock in tn. Truck worked ok and nothing broke that I see...however there are a few things I want / need to address

1. It needs to flex better for the reallt hard stuff....i think the issue revolves around the rear suspension so thats where i'm starting.

2. I need dual cases.....single 4.7 low sucks

3. Bunch of minor random crap.

I did beat on it pretty hard a couple times and it held great so what I dis already works....just need to keep going.

Gonna try to sort the oil leak out tonight.

Back story: it has had a mild-moderate oil leak from the front of the engine since I got it...i never worried about it...then in windrock while going down a super steep hill it basicallypouring oil out....it only did it going down reall steep hills....it leaked down to about 1/2 - 3/4 qt low and stopped. It has sat in my garage unmooved since I got home with no spots under it.

I am thinking its the crank seal....any other thoughts.....my plan is to fill it with oil, clean it really good, then let it run while somehow elevating the rear end and watch for the leak to start.
