Default Insurance inspectors

Been with F. B. insurance now for over 17plus years. Iím talking house, cottage, and 5 vehicles. Had one claim the whole time Iíve been with them. Get a letter in the mail telling me they arenít going to cover the contents in my 30x40 pole barn. The explanation is ďfailure to maintain the buildingĒ. I know it needs a roof and planned on replacing it this next summer. In fact I discussed it with the wife just last month. Anybody who knows me I take care of my shit.
My wife had just showed me the letter when the Insurance agent called. So WTF? He explained to me because there have been so many claims this last year the company is inspecting peopleís property. I asked whatís the roof got to do with anything AND what are you doing snooping around my property? He said they do a visual inspection. Thatís BS because my PB sits on the back of 3 acers. The inspector would have to walk my property to look at my PB. Then he tells me that he canít insure any out building that heats with wood and has gas in it. Then he asked me whatís in the PB? Two lawn tractors and my work shop. Are you serious? Iíve heated that building with wood for years. Nope sorry. Canít insure it with any vehicles or anything that runs on gas or gas cans in them. Fine. . . Iíll do my business somewhere else.
So when you guys at works, beware, your insurance inspector could be snooping around.

I believe all insurance companies do this. State farm was in the back of my property sometime in the last three months taking photos behind my pole barn because the underwriters were worried about the addition of the chimney on it, and wanted to come inspect it because they did not believe me that it was a gas furnace and not a wood burning furnace.

That's what insurance companies do, so I really didn't have a problem. Everything that runs on gas that is stored inside is also insured with state farm.

I guess I wouldn't have a problem either . . . We've experienced a B&E this year I have a real problem with ANYBODY snooping, inspecting, casing, or walking around my property without me around or with my permission. I think they could use a little more customer service in this area in communicating what there're doing.
Loosing a paying customer is another thing.

It's probably buried in the fine print that they can do whatever the fukc they want to when it comes to your property.

Farm Bureau is the only company I know that will insure a barn or garage with wood heat.

I had my agent recalculate my replacement value recently. The replacement value was reduced saving me $180 a year. Because of this change the underwriter sent an inspector out from JMI. I received a post card prior to the inspection letting me know they were coming. I was home when the inspector visited. He only took exterior pics and did not enter my home or pole barn. He did not accept my invitation to verify that I do not have a woodburner even though I have a flue for one. I have heard nothing since his visits and I am keeping my fingers crossed.
I have owned two homes in the past 25 years and I have never filed a claim but this is the first time I was made aware of an inspection.

Well that's what I'm saying. . . They had the courtesy of contacting you to tell you what there doing. There could at least been some dialogue between us. Not like a Gestapo sneaking around your property and then send you a letter to tell you "Not covered" Period. WTF, then the agent has to deal with a pissed off customer. I've owned three houses and a cottage plus all my vehicles over 25 years. Just this year I had a Homeowners claim from a B&E. .Fricking insurance company's are telling people how to run there lives. Now that's customer service . .

I keep my old Buick in our pole barn and pay $50/year for "vehicle fire insurance" in case the car starts the fire. Otherwise, the pole barn and contents wouldn't be covered if the LeSabre started it. I suppose they could try the same thing with gas cans and lawn mowers. I can't drive the car on the road since it's not covered for anything but garage sitting right now.

We've had break-ins near us so when the township said they needed to send assessors out to re-measure newer homes we were warned. Turned out that the previous "measure person" didn't know how to do math or something and some of the newer homes were either taxed as larger or smaller. I pulled up the day they were here and saw the guys measuring.
The guy with the clipboard asked me if we've added on since the original occupancy permit - it was obvious we didn't. It's a log home shaped like a rectangle and it's pretty obvious that there are no additions.
Question #2 - "Do you know if you have a fireplace?"
Answer - "You know something, I've never seen a chimney on my house so I'm thinking I never had a fireplace."
His reply "I don't write these questions, I'm only a contractor."
We laughed and they left.

I was visited by our inspector about 2 months ago on my day off. My garage is attached to the house with our bedrooms above it. I had the garage door open and was torching the IFS brackets off a 95 explorer. Had smoke rolling out the garage door from all the undercoating etc burning. He didn't say boo to me and I haven't heard a thing.

I just had the call from my F.B. agent and my rates will be dropping by 25% to include my 35x40 out building and contents.........seriously.

So I must be getting what you lost.

BTW last year I got re roofed due to a hailstorm to the tune of a 15K claim

Be glad they didn't give you a letter stating if you didn't replace the roof then they would not renew your insurance. This happened to me with my house roof. I never filed a claim of any sort and never had a drop of water through my roof. All insurance agencies send out reps to visually inspect now. I ended up switching insurance agencies for a year till I saved up enough to replace my roof. They are not in the business to lose money.
