Telling your boss you plan on leaving like 4-5 months in advance... Bad idea?
He's an older guy and pretty nice/understanding, actually was my "big brother" through the YMCA for a while. He's picky about who he hires, its mostly a family business.
Its not a hard job but a good amount of their business depends on me. New guy would need a little training and a while to figure out how everything works here.
I just don't want to leave them in a bad spot when I finally take off, so would like to give some warning.
But I also feel like that opens me up to getting shitcanned prematurely...

Tired of midland and this job, moving to Iowa to work for my BIL.

I wouldn't give that much notice. How much time do you think it would take for a replacement to get up to speed? I'm not talking about to your same level of performance but to perform the essential job duties?

I told my boss 6 months in advance because of my position and him needing to prep someone else. He just laughed at me and told me I'd never quit.

Needless to say I still gave my two week notice. Then when it was my last day, I inventoried all of my shit and turned the keys to my truck.

His jaw dropped and he had no
Idea what to do. Since then he is no longer a manager and that whole crew has been spilt up. Oops on his part.

So I'd go with your gut. Don't burn any bridges just in case.

How long do you think it will take to find a replacement? Does your position require a skill set that is hard to find? The process of finding someone can be a few months long depending on the industry and position. How long on the job training will someone need?

For just the cartridge
reman stuff maybe A week or two to get the basics and the different brands/Types down. Id say A month to get mostly up to speed.

I did three days training in new Jersey for printer repair the rest is a "learn as you go" type thing.

I'm trying to do this as honestly and easily as possible. Eventually I'm going to have to come back and help take care of mom and will need A job in mi again (if we can't get her to come to Iowa).

I'm not sure on replacement time. We have another knowledgeable guy that works for us already, I think they would be better off to put him in my position and find sometime else to fill his.
No real skills, a trained monkey could do the cartridge Reman stuff. General electronics and mechanical knowledge is good for printer repair, being able to look at something and say "I see your problem and know how to fix it".

Typing on phone sucks.

Sheffield/Chapin
Between mason city and Hampton.

Working for my BIL doing a bit of everything. He does combine/equipment repair and service, and custom planting/harvesting. I run the combine for harvest. Go on service calls if he needs help, etc. and I'm supposed to be the new "parts guy", keep everything organized and inventoried, etc.

Have you ever been to Chapin? lol
Ill be living in a basement. No TV, little/no internet (phone service sucks), everything but the bars and gas station close at like 7pm, closest big town is half an hour away, Hampton is 4 mi but is dead after 9pm, etc.
Wake up, work, eat, work, eat, spend a couple hours swearing at my phone trying to download porn or watch a movie on the laptop, maybe go visit the night shift girl at the gas station, sleep, repeat.

But I still like it more than MI. lol
I just miss trees and water after a while.
