HELP! - D50/60 Axle Advice Needed
How I arrived at the current state is a long story, but the relevant information is as follows: I've got a 99 F350 with a Dana50 (same as D60 except in the internals from what I understand) solid front axle. I currently have the axle shafts and diff carrier removed. Can you guys with D50/60 experience please weigh in on whether or not it is safe to drive the truck in the current condition?
My question really pertains to the hub assembly. Will it blow apart if the stub shafts are not installed?
I have experience with D30s, and I know that the stub shaft/nut is an integral part of the overall hub assembly. On this D50 though, the hub has a large nuttish looking thing on the back side that appears to hold everything together. Additionally, when the stub shaft is properly installed the only thing holding it into the hub assembly is a circlip...which I know would not hold this beast together if things started falling apart. These two observations lead me to believe that the hub is self-sufficient and is not dependent on the stub shaft, but I'd really like additional opinions from those who experience with these larger axles.
