Lesson learned;
  • when you lose a lobe on your cam, thouroughly check rocker arm for stress fractures.

no rotella and all similar diesel oils dropped most of the zddp in thier oils due to tree hugger mandate. most new oils are in the 300 to 500 ppm of zddp. old oils were 1000 to 1500 ppm zddp. you can run any oil you prefer and add zddp also. i run mobil 1 5w40 in my lj. its about 1200 ppm zddp. valvoline vr1 has a similar zddp level. excessive zddp can harm cat convertors just so you know.

its a common problem. bigger cam, bigger/stronger springs, faster failure.

brad penn was one of the first guys to address the zddp levels in oil.

order some roller rockers!

Got it back together tonight, seems to be running okay. I'm just going to take it easy for the next few weeks and keep an eye on it.

I'm able to get Brad Penn 10w40 for $5.19 a quart, and 10w30 for $4.89.
Its a lot of money considering I have a 9 quart system, but its not as bad as thought it was going to be.

Pretty much my motor, except I actually have the rectangular ports for the 375hp, .....little different cam, and I don't have the roller rockers yet.

I think I'm going to save up for a set though.

From those I talk too, and articles I have been reading; Valve lifter adjustment, cam, and lifters were the troublesome spot on this engine.

Still looking for the receipt on the radiator, but its not as big as you would think. I had temp problem when I bought the rig, but after I threw away the Electical fan and put a 7 blade mechanical fan on it, it runs about 185 in temp.

I ordered a set of Scorpion Roller Rockers today from Lane.
Its the last of the Top End components that I'm going to buy for this motor. If it doesn't work the way I want, I will have to make a major decision I'm afraid.

Installed the new roller rocker arms tonight. They rub on my Valve covers.

So,.............If anybody has a set of "tall" aftermarket Valve Covers for a Big Block Chevy, I need them.
