Default zj not shifting?

after beating on the ZJ at the mounds yesterday my auto trans didn't want to shift on the way home. I realized it at the first stop sign after leaving when i took off it was in at least 3rd. I am able to manually shift into 1st, 2nd, then when i put it in drive it take a lot longer than it should to shift through the next gears. it will make it all the way to 5th so i was able to make my hour and a half drive home. I don't know much about auto trans besides that i hate them and don't trust them, but since it will work in every gear "its just hard getting it there" could there be anything to look at or fix other than needing a new trans? Maybe a valve body problem? Ever since i got the truck it has always shifted extremely hard into reverse.

Well it is a three speed plus overdrive so if you are in fifth you have problems...

yeah lol. i was just assuming it was 5 speed. when on the freeway now if you get on it it seems like it down shifts but not as low as it used to. when your cruising at 70 and punch the gas should it normally down shift to 3rd or all the way down to 2nd? either way is there a chance theirs anything it could be other than needing a new trans or rebuild?

Try disconecting the battery for five min's. My xj went into limp mode a few times at the dunes after I hit some high rpms.

The vent for the transmission is behind the torque converter. If it was in water or mud up to the transmission pan there is a decent chance it sucked some in. it has happened to me. Trans was shifting funny when I left then didn't want to shift unless it was at wot or something. It was a bunch of years ago so the memory is a bit foggy about the details. Check your fluid. Also check to see if you're TV cable is moving easily with the throttle.

check your t.v. cable going from the tranny to the throttle body, sounds like your bracket got bent !

well just after finally cleaning most of the mud off of it i drove it yesterday and it was shifting closer to normal but not fully normal. when i would come to a stop and then take off it would shift down to 1st after a second of taking off. maybe i should try adjusting the tv cable if i can figure out how

The TV cable adjuster it attached by the throttle linkage. The tighter the cable, the firmer the shifts. It will shift later and downshift with less throttle. A loose cable will shift early, slip more and burn up the Trans.

What does the color of the fluid look like? Does it look more of a pink color? And did you check it when the trans was hot?

And in neutral. Usually when Trans fluid gets wet it changes from red to pepto bismol pink.

If it was my Jeep, I would drop the trans pan and change the filter. Because you said you had it sumerged, it's likely water got into the trans through the vent tube. So before you do anymore damage I would do a trans service. Very simple to do and if it hasn't been done in awhile or you have no idea when the last time that service has been done, it's definitely time to do it. I say this because you said the fluid looks a little high. What year is your ZJ and do you have the 4.0 or 5.2 in it?
