Default His and Hers 5.ohhhh explorers

B2's Explorer

Page 3 Dirty girl's Explorer

I have my Early bronco for the hard and destructive stuff. Back a few years ago I had a Ranger Truggy that was a trailer queen and I had a lifted and locked explorer as a DD. It was nice having two very capable trucks at my disposal. Then I put together a rig for Alboys dad and that got the wheels turning again and I decided I wanted a lifted and capable 2nd gen explorer.

The old duo.

Then Alboys dads next to my wifes stocker.

I had this bronco for the last couple years. But I didn't want a fullsize, but I wanted the v8.

So I sold the bronco last week and bought a 98 Explorer 5.0L

Original plan was to go full width and 33's or 35's. DD used and weekend warrior stuff driving to/from places instead of trailering. Then I stumbled across this explorer on explorerforum and got me thinking.

Now I think I am gonna do a 1" BL, and torsion twist with shackles and see if I can clear 33x12.50s with no cutting. I already have a set of 33" Duratracs. I also plan to swap out the AWD tcase for the BW4406 which will give me 2hi, 4hi, 4lo. Maybe some bumpers and slider eventually as well.

Eh, Already been down this road. Only reason I got rid of the explorer in the first pic was to acquire a Tow rig. I have that now, so back to where I was with building a DD.

radhazard1 has a 1997 set up about how you want to do yours. It wheels good and drives down the road nice. He would be a good person to talk to if you need any info. He has a repair shop in North Muskegon...

I know it says sold in the thread but he still has it. There are a few pics inside of his explorer.

I think this will be an interesting build, i like the stockish- mild builds as i kno ill never own or be on fullwidths ....but i actually have thought about a 5.0 expo this era too...i know with the zjs to swap out the awd is just pretty much swaping tcases so is it the same on the expos?

Swap the tcase out with a 97-03 f150 tcase. Front driveshaft from a 4.6L expedition with a convrsion jint. Rear driveshaft from a 5.4L expedition. Few clearnce mods on the floor and gas tank bracket. It not as simple on the 97 older explorers due to the vss, that's why I intentionally found a 98+.

Done yet?

I think al still has those shackles I made, good for a little lift. I also have a longer torsion bar bolt for the driverside you can have.

Yeah I need two sets of shackles.....I should add the wife and I both own 98 Explorers with the 5.0L and both trucks are getting 4406's, Torision twists w/shackles, and some form of body lift. Plan is to clear 33x12.50's on my truck with no trimming and atleast 32's on hers with no trimming.

I picked up one of the 4406's today at LKQ, still need another one. Probably gonna call a local yard tomorrow and get the drive shafts. I am on vacation first full week of Dec. and plan to swap her case out then and do a 1" body lift so I don't have to clearance the floor pans.

Good thing I went and got that tcase last weekend. They cleaned that row out and scrapped them between then and today. Got one front driveshaft today. Now I just need a rear and I can start the swap. Think my explorer will be first, my tcase really hates life. Damn thing binds up in reverse and almost brings me to a stop.

i have a rear d shaft.front d shaft, a tcase and a bunch of other stuff...all f150. you know you can clip the wire on the awd case and make it 2 wheel right. give me a call and i might be able to bring the stuff to the party this weekend.

Not on mine, its 100% all wheel drive. There are NO wires going to/from my awd case.

Looks hot Bones, were those 10.50 or 12.50 wide? And what was the drivetrain?

B2's Explorer

I did just order some soft 8's for the explorer though . Putting the tcase in today and maybe the shackles and TT.

10.5 wide. 12.5 wide on aftermarket rims were nto even close to fitting. I would have had to cut 3" out of the rear of the front wheel-wells.

It was bone stock drivetrain and it was my college driver in 2002 or 2003. I've learned a lot since then haha.
