BMI is one potential indication of health. Lets all be honest here, most people with a high BMI are not body builders or secretly healthy. That is why I think the doctors should be the ones indicating whether you are healthy or not.

BMI is a shitty measure at best, why should we base a system around that when there are more accurate methods out there.

Ask the people that were told 50 years ago that within 10 years we would be completely switched over to the metric system...

Because we are the U fucking nited States of America and half assed is what we do best!

I don't agree that a doctor should be the final say on what is healthy and what is not. Each person is different as has already been pointed out.

Take me for example. The BMI would say I am overweight but I know I am the perfect example of being fit.

Then your doctor is not a partner in your own health and you should fire him. Also if your doctor has no high BMI patients the insurance agency might get on to his tactics. Also if your doctor can be bought for a few dollars then he or she is pretty stupid to risk their license.

during my multiple years in human resources in the auto industry i NEVER heard of one doctor getting punished for writing false sick visit slips or practicing serial toe surgery. we had to change OUR way of doing business.

some doctors are NOT in the health care team-mate business. they're in it for the money. just as michael jackson's attending physician.

This is a crock! I am 47 years old and am in decent shape for my age. My BMI is 26 that makes me overweight. I am 5'8" 165 and usually about 10 -12 %body fat . That would piss me off to see a skinny, smoking tool get better rates than me.

This is what a fat person looks like according to the gov.

The BMI is the worst thing ever created. You should focus your paper on how flawed it is, rather than making the remote suggestion that it should continue to be used for anything. Military Commanders use it to harass Soldiers who are otherwise in good health and meet HT/WT regulations, which are already skewed to the thin side.

BMI is horse shit. Everyone's physique is different.....

and the government should stay the hell out of our healthcare...end of story.

If they were to do something of this sort, a body density test would be much more accurat way of doing it. It still wouldn't take all other things that could factor into a single persons health. So if the person has an acceptable BMI but smokes a pack a day, thats better then a person who is classified as "overweight" by the BMI but is physically fit???? Sounds like a bunch of BS to me

What about using body fat percentage then? I don't think the government should be in the health care business at all.

That is my point exactly. It is flawed and I don't agree with it being used to determine our health care needs. The CDC on the other hand says it is the cheaper than any other alternative. So in essence how ever the government can determine how overweight we are the better, not taking into account that it is completely worthless and wrong.

I want to thank all of you that have commented so far, it is giving me great ammo for my argument. I will keep this poll open at least until my paper is done, just to see how many people will comment and vote. Thanks again and I'll see you all at the Christmas party.:b eerbang:
