Default PSA Safety goggles > safety glasses

I got the classic metal chunk in the eye yesterday while grinding a weld. I had safety glasses on but it got around them. Next time I will wear goggles. I had to get it drilled out twice. The first time was last night and the numbing drops wore off while drilling. Worst pain I've ever felt. This morning I had to go back and they drilled out the rust ring. Monday I go back to make sure they got it all. If not I will have to get surgery to get it all.

After having 4 eye surgeries in the last 3 years I can say that it sucks and yes you should protect your eyes.

My welding helmet has a grind setting for the lens and that's what I normally wear.

Yeah i finally bought a full shield that i wear over top of my goggles. Also i just picked up a a face shield that has the upper part made out of like snowboarding goggles. It is essentially like a paintball mask.

After having this happen two times i decided better to be way over board then go through that shit again.

I had some rust fall in my eye several months ago and that sucked. I went to the er that night and they picked out 2 pieces with the end of a needle and then I went to an ophthalmologist the next day and she got out 2 more pieces.

Ive had this happen twice so far. First time I was not wearing anything, got some stuff in there and left it for 3 days hoping it would come out or something....it didn't. Got it picked out by an eye doc with a needle then got a face mask. Years later I can barely see thru that mask and want to get a new one but I had switched to glasses a while back. Had em on and still got a piece in there maybe a month ago. Tried to get it out again but no luck this time.

Usually I can get stuff outta there with a wet Q tip by holding my eye open and slowly spinning the Q tip on there, it can just pick the piece up. I had to get that one out and the Dr. used what he called a burr which is just a really small dremel tool. That thing freaked me rite out and having been up for around 30 hours at that time I dam near passed out.

Anyway I heard about using a small magnet on it next time. Makes sense and Ill try it if I ever need to

You should have described the process a little better.

1) Dr puts your chin on a ledge. and says "get comfy."

2) Dr uses a 1/2 impact wrench to tighten down the halo... Like the one used when somebody breaks their neck. Dr tightens them down until there is a a drop of blood coming from each of the pointy little screws that are digging into your skull.

3) Dr puts the eye lid clip in so that you can not blink.

4) the Dr will fire up a a dremmel tool...Sounds like a dental drill... Spins at like 25,000 RPM

5) Dr will say "You might feel some pressure"... In medical terms this means "It will hurt like H3LL"

6) As he touches your eye with the dental tool dremmel the vertical hold you your eye goes crazy and the picture starts rolling.

They just bought everyone in our lab these to prevent this type of injury. I use the heck out of mine when grinding anything now.

Ahhhhhh! I will now, and forever, wear a full face mask and Goggles. Eye violence is like nails on the chalk board to me. I can barely stand putting in eye drops.

That is exactly what I want. How do they stand up to sparks in the clear plastic? Also can you get ear muffs on with this shield on? My last shield just melted and caught just about every single spark that came my way. It was not more than a few months until I could not see too well thru it. I know they are replaceable but the plastic on my safety glasses never caught a single one, they just bounced off

Man, that's rough. I wear contacts thankfully and over the years they have caught tons of crap like scale and other chunks of metal from getting in my eyes.

not sure how long they will last against heavy sparks but I was using a 4" cut off wheel most of the 3 days back in the welding shop and didn't have any issues. no marks on the lens yet

I have had too many eye injuries to count and aren't supposed to have any more. I wear safety glasses under a full face shield now.
