in texas? learn to ride a horse, rope a steer, fire a six shooter. travel to other locales on weekends/days off. look up best resturants/bars/diners,drive-ins and dives/join a health club and meet some folk, go to different churches on sunday and experience a little variety. forget the whitebread sh*t. buy a used jeep and go off road [this likely pretty boring after climbing some of your towers]. call friends and family back home often.

No per diem here, I just put my expenses on the company card. I sightsee, work out, go to restaurants/bars...

If you are in an area for a while, make some friends and hang out. I go to local forums for hobbies I have and meet people.

Like BlooMule, I walk for relaxation. I'm lucky that when I travel for work it's normally in an area with a lot to see and do (Chicago, DC, San Francisco, Seattle, etc.) so I can always find some interesting places to check out. On days where I am traveling and have a bit more free time, I use that as an occasion to go to a movie alone (something my wife would normally never want to see) or I'll find a concert to go to.

I also use the time to catch up on my reading...

Most days working 14-20 hours doesn't leave a lot of time.
But If i have a lot of time i will go to either the hotel or a good local gym, most YMCA's will do day passes and are usually decent facilities.
I'll sightsee if it's a city i haven't been to 3592358 times already (not likely).
Many cities i have friends in and will hang out with them as schedule allows.
My ipad is a great source or time occupance too. I watch a movie or TV show every now and then. Play games or read a lot.

But often too if i have time off of showsite i'll find myself working on the next project

I have a Bike when it is warm out to head up town and get some real food. I make a day of it. Every now and then I will drop a Bill for cab fare and head to the Syracuse mall, concert, or local event. Most of the time though I just watch movies or chat online.

Found a interesting game yesterday. Well I found it over a year ago just forgot about it because it did not work with last years POS laptop. It is called Rigs of Rods, it is free ware, and it has some fun courses and vehicles to mess around with. It takes like 20 minutes to download and 3/4 hour to install the full version. But hey we all have time to kill right?

Here is a good link

I usually get in late, I will go sit in the hotel Jacuzzi or visit the hotel bar and get food. I'm not a huge drinker, but I have met some very cool people in bars.
