Default 2001 suburban lost steering

I went to my son's school and on the way home went to make a right hand turn and the steering would not move. like it was locked. I could get it to turn enough to make a very wide turn.

So I get it home and I take off the power steering cap and there was pressure built up because it made a "air relief noise"

So I took the stick out and it smells burned.

The belt is still turning with no problems, so did the power steering pump go, or could it be the steering box?

If it is the power steering pump are they hard to replace?

Take the belt off and see if you can remove the pulley by hand.It will probly still have half the shaft on it

I will be tackling this tomorrow but by the sounds of your post it is the power steering pump?

Are they are to replace?

Not hard, you will need a puller and installer to get pulley on and off.

How can I tell if I have hydroboost or vacuum boost?

Should I get the whole pump with the reservoir or can you just replace the "pump" or is it one of those things you cant tell until you take it apart

Thanks for all the help

hydro boost systems will have lines going from the powersteering pump to behind the matser cylinder for the brakes.then return lines coming back and hooking up to the stering box. were vacuum brakes have a vacuum line going from a booster(behind master cylinder for brakes) to the back of the engine. hope this helps

Can you replace just the "pump" and re use the reservoir? or is one of those things you have to wait and see what it looks like when you get it off?

Well got it off and it sheared the shaft right off inside the pump.

Got the replacement and will finish installing tomorrow, takes a lot longer when you have back and neck issues, this thing called pain gets in the way
