I usually drive from the campground to the dunes when we are at SL.

Besides the few miles of road to get to the trails, during this past SnoFari one group did have occasion to meet up with the DNR for some quality time on the trails that involved presenting a registration & insurance slip. No tickets or anything because we were legitimate, but they do occasionally verify by spot check that we posses the proper trail permits, vehicle paper work, etc...

At this time, I don't think anyone has that as an official plan, and I would not want to limit my run because of one person.

The other problem is insurance. In order for for us to have our umbrella policy, I believe all vehicles must have basic insurance. But, I'm not up to speed on our latest insurance so we will need to hear from someone else.

thanks for the info.

I would totally be up for this option! Its always a blast doing the rides through state land, but I wish I had more time to play on the rocks last year. Not everyone in the group wanted to play on the rocks (which I understand) and I did not want to hold them up. Also the tight & twisty trails of the motorsport area is a blast to run.

Being able to trailer to St Helen parking lot and then launch from there would be nice.

Dan & I have two currently unused areas in the scramble area that we're going to try to mark out / make a path to before the snow flies. They both involve a rather severe elevation change and would involve some fairly technical driving / winching.

If there were a run going to that area, yes, you could trailer out there. The exit is 10 miles further north from the base of the event. (exit 222 versus 212) There is a parking lot that is about 10 minutes off the exit. If there is good snow, a full day can be spent in the motorsport area.

There is a good amount of trails & the rocks can keep one busy for at least half a day. Add in a group of 10 rigs and you easily could have a day when you add all the time that the group would be watching others play on the rocks.

Last year the rocks were snowed/iced over pretty bad making them very difficult to do. One built rig could easliy spend 15 minutes going up one of the rock obstacles... and there is always a high chance of broken parts.

Did they check vehicle legality (specificaly lift height) along with proper plates and ins.? I can plate and insure the ZJ no problem but I'm also full hydro and way over the lift limit.

I'd also be down for a run in the motorsport area as then I could just trailer in there.

As far as for vehicles; just reg & ins was all I was asked for. The groups I've been in or guided over the last few years have had some pretty wild looking modified rigs / buggies and were NEVER hassled by the local PD or DNR as far as lift law stuff.

Our (GLFWDA) insurance policy only requires whatever vehicle insurance is necessary to get you legally on the road, in the old days we called it PL/PD. Event insurance provides coverage for the DNR/State of MI in the event of a mishap on state land, but provides no insurance for your vehicle or for any personal liability that arises from you operating your vehicle.

I am not going to make it this year - we have a new out of state project that I have to travel to once every quarter, plus a lot of follow-up once we get back. Kinda kills my January.
