Well she starts and runs. And runs pretty dam good. All of my gauges work exept for my volt gauge. It Reads battery voltage whith key on and charge voltage running then about 30 seconds later it pegs the needle ant my check gauges light comes on.Its got me stumped right now because when it pegs the needle the system voltage is at like 13.8 so Let the fun begin. I know its a long shot but anybody run factory gauges with a 5.3 liter swap and had a issue like this? Wondering if maybe its a a,prage problem and not a voltage problem.

Scratch that last post. Suburbans run a higher amp alternator that was charging more than the jeep ecm wanted.put a truck alternator on it and now all my gauges work.

Well I thought i had my voltage problem fixed but it`s still not right
After wiring my fan in today i fired it up and since i ran the battery down a little bit the gm alternator is putting out more than the jeep ecm wants to see. Basically the jeep computer hasa actual voltage and desired voltage when the gm alternator puts out more than the desired voltage my gauge goes full bore and check gauges light comes on.So who on here is good with automotive electrical. How can i make my internally regulated alternator not put out any more than like 13.4-13.5 volts.Or can I put a resistor before my jeep computer to make it think it only has that voltage?

I am good..well ok, I am great with electrical. I would think the best way to go about it would be change the programming in the PCM. I need to read back through the thread but do you have a stand alone pcm for the engine or did you have the factory pcm programmed and get a wiring harness to plug into it?

The gm is a stand alone system.the jeep computer thinks that the 5.3 is the 4.0 liter running the problem is that the jeep computer tinks it can still control the alternator and it cant the gm is regulated on its own. Can i have the jeep computer reflashed to get ri of the desired voltage and is the jeep pcm the problem or is it the processor in the cluster that tells the needle to peg?

I will check it out tomorrow and let you know. A couple questions though.

1. What year is your jeep?

2. So the GM pcm is controlling the alternator correct?

3. What year is the engine and GM pcm you put in?

4. Who made the stand alone harness?

Flashing and Jeep ECMs don't exist together in the same sentence from what I've heard. Have you searched through the 5.3 thread on pirate? Lots of good info in there. I'll take a look in a little while and see if I can find something for you.

well just in case you wanted my 2 cents i was having all kinds of problems with my volt gauge pegging out i when out and bought a new(used) computer thinking that would fix it because my jeep is completely stock motor wise....ended up being my batterie it would still start my jeep everytime but it was drained down enough that my computer would tell the alternator to charge at 19 volts it even fried my alternator before i figured it out.........i know its a bit different but my be worth a shot just to throw the batterie out of the daily driver and see what it does?

The computer wasnt actually telling your to charge at 19 volts its set up that way to throw the idiot light when over charging more than 13.6 jeeps do the same thing backwards with no charge it drops the needle down all the way to throw the check gauges light it wont actually read low voltage.
