Check engine light

The check engine light came on in my wifes 08 Grand Prix. Is there a way to get the trouble code to display without a scanner? I do not have a scanner tonight and I just want to get a jump on getting it fixed.

Have them tell you the actual P code. That way when the dropout tells you what his interpretation of what the scanner is saying, you can come home and google it, and find out just how far off the kid was.
