Default Would like some maintenance feedback on the 6.7 Powerstroke

Im new to the Powerstroke world, and was looking for some firsthand knowledge on the typical maintenance required on these engines to keep them healthy.

After getting half way thru the owners guide, I started to realize that these engines were a little more advanced, and complicated that I first thought.

Like the DEF.....Where are you guy's buying this? Maybe Im making a big fuss for nothing, but this seems like its going to be a pain in the ass. How often are you guys draing the water separators? And are there any kinds of fuel I should stay away from?

Please hold off on the bashing. I dont want to hear all the B.S. about how Im and idiot for buying something I dont know anything about, or not searching. Just wanted to hear some opinions from owners, about things that I should be aware of that the manuals dont cover.

Thanks in advance, Keith.

Oil change - Frequent, on the 7.3 bones recommended 5,000 and no longer due to the oil firing the injectors, I have no clue if the 6.7 requires the same diligence.

Fuel filter - Again bones recommended every other change if I remember right.

Fuel - If it's a DD or a fairly often driven truck you should be fine with diesel out of any pump, I try to use the more well traveled truck stops that I feel are getting fresher fuel. In 20,000 miles i haven't had an issue yet.

DEF - Can be purchased at auto parts stores, or most major truck stops.

What is the service interval specified for the water seperators? I dunno if my truck even has one, if it does I bet it's over due for a draining.....

Manual states Service on the DFCM filter is 15000 miles, 6 hours, or 600 engine hours. Couldnt find anything about draining the water seperator, or may have passed over it in the 1000 times I've read the manual. Pretty sure I came across something on FordTruck.com that says to drain it at every oil change.

Some of my curiosity comes from the Diesel Exhuast Fluid. It says that it freeze's at 12 degrees. WTF? It gets alot colder than 12 degrees. Am I supposed to put an additive in the DEF? Seems Ford only wants you to use their DEF. Dont know enough about it yet to use something different.

The DEF dose freeze at 12 degrees but the tank has a heater built in so when you start the truck it thaws the tank. As far as service I would recommend every 5k on oil and 10 on the fuel filters.
Get your fuel from stations with high turn over rate and run a water dispersant additive and you really should never have to drain your water sep. unless you get bad fuel, but that is what the additive is for.

To kickstand your 7.3 dose have a water drain on the back of the fuel filter housing, but if you change your filter every 10k and clean the filter resivore you should not need to mess with the drain. Dont turn unless you have to they like to take a set and if you turn it it may start to leak fuel.

My buddy has a 2011 6.7L and now 8500 miles on it, and all he has done is oil change at 6k, and had to put DEF into at 7000 miles when the light came on in dash.
