Offhand, I'd say you have an engine of the V8 variety.

It appears to be a V8.

edit: damn it, bluemule beat me to it. But I confirm his suspicions.

Is that black thing-a-ma-bob on top the carb?? That looks like a very old engine, looks clean and in good shape though.

The old man that built it passed away without leaving any information.
It was known that he was into building air planes. The engine was assembled 15 years ago
and never fired.

That looks to be an old stromberg single barrel carb but it also looks like that carb spacer is custom made just doesn't look like it belongs there. I do agree it looks like an aluminum block and heads which leads me to believe it's an old Buick but it doesn't have the canted distributor. The valley pan is reminiscent of an old Poncho but the rest of it doesn't fit . I noticed the plugs are also canted so I would have to again lean towards old Buick. You can't find any other casting marks on the block ? Very interesting. Looking again it does appear the dist. is canted it was just the angle of the photo. hard to tell from the picture but the transmission does appear to be a outboard drive unit I would have to agree possibly a Buick marine engine.
