Default WHo the hell welds a crank pulley to a motor? W/ Pics

So I picked up a 93 impreza LS awd for a winter beater for $275.00 knowing it needed a wheel bearing, mirror and a few other things. Well I also noticed it had an issue with a wobbly crank pulley. I was going to order one from someone on RS25.com but decided to pull it off today to check the woodruff key on it. upon pulling it off I notice that the emeffer was welded by a previous owner. Guessing the key wore and wallowed the crank and they felt welding it and putting the bolt back on half ass was a great solution.
Now WTF do I do?
The sweet bolt with all it's sweet add ons.

One killer solution for some sort of problem.

Buy a lifetime warranty belt from one of the big box no questions asked parts stores, and keep a spare belt and tools in the car.

LOL...sorry I had to laugh first. How good is it welded? If its a shitty weld you might be able to use a pulley puller on it and hope the weld breaks.

I did the same thing to an Escort that belonged to a co-worker. There was no bolt, it was a press fit that no longer fit tight, he didn't care, so it got a nice mig weld......

It was just an Escort, anyway.

I've welded a crank pully or two in the past because the crank snout was effed up and I had to get the motor functional. I make no apologies.

How well will the motor hold up to a pulley with death wobble?

You are as unlucky at buying vehicles as I am with buying tires.

  • You are no longer allowed to buy vehicles on your own.
  • You must have a CTOR member with you anytime you think you may purchase a vehicle.
  • If you sneak out and decide to buy a vehicle without a CTOR member, you are to haul directly to the scrap yard.
  • Do not go home, do not stop at a parts store.
  • Go directly to the scrap yard!!

90* grinder and a pulley puller, get it off examine how effed the crank is, repair if possible, re-weld (true) and drive the wheels off of that sum-bitch.

Drive it. If it becomes a problem, then worry about it. For $275 I'm surprised it runs.

x2

I can't even think of any parts that I've bought lately that were less than $275, let alone a whole running vehicle. :)
