Default Dive trip to Gilboa Quarry in January

Here are a bunch of pics I took yesterday and today. Water temp was 33 degrees, and I had a catastrophic drysuit failure, so I got to go for an 11 minute swim in ice water!

It was great fun. On the first dive I had holes develop at two seams, then ripped my drysuit hood when I was taking it off. Water this cold is killer on equipment, and my drysuit is about ten years old now, so it has seen alot of abuse.

I was able to patch it up and do a dive the second day however :)

You swam for 11 minutes in 33* water? Most people would have been unconcious by then.

Have you ever dove at the Monroe Quarry in Monroe,MI?

I've wanted to try it for years, but never seem to make it happen. I certainly wouldn't want to cold weather dive, brr

Yes, I ended up in the first stages of hypothermia. My hands were nearly frozen solid and my dive buddy had to help me out of my drysuit so I could get dry and run under warm water. It was extremely painful when the bloodflow returned! After that we went back to the hotel where I spent most of the evening in the hot tub :)

Yes, most of what you see in the pics was put there for fun and training. The big container thing on the poles next to the boat in a couple pics is the original water tower from when the quarry was in operation, but it fell down.

Yes once. It was pretty murky the day I was there and only did the crusher pit but it was pretty cool. I'd like to go again sometime. If you are ever up for a dive there I'd be willing to meet up as I understand they do not allow solo diving?
