Default Geo Metro 5spd shifter hard to move?

I am looking into buying a Geo Metro as cheap transportation and found one for a reasonable prive but the shifter is hard to move. It a little stiff in a straight line between 1st & 2nd or 3rd & 4th but real bad when you have to move it sideways from 2nd to 3rd or 4th to 5th. Anybody have any experiance with these? Any ideas what to look for?

scratch what i said. apparently those don't use cables like other fwd's do but rather a shift rod attached to the shifter and the transmission. i would check the bushings to see if they are getting rusted up causing your tightness.
