Default Silver Lake Dunes Questions -- please advise me

Hey guys - I am going up to Silverlake Sand Dunes for my Bachelor party and have a few concerns maybe someone can clear up or help me with.

I have read and re-read the DNR website and silverlake website but it is not clear on exactly the requirements.

First off... quads and dune buggys that do not have michigan license plates or registration... do you just need an ORV sticker on them???

Second... What about actually vehicles that we might drive in... I know they need ORV stickers on them, but what about this "recreational passport" that seems to be linked to your vehicle registration. My problem with this is I am a license MI car dealer and use "dealer" plates on all my vehicles. Does this mean I wont be able to get that passport and they wont let me in?

Or can I just get a state park permit for the vehicle?

Please give me advice from people who have been up there and know the drill.

THANKS

to be honest and up front i havent been to the dunes in two years but in my experience the quads and dune buggies just need orv's and all i remember is getting state parks and orv's for the trucks. This may change but you also need to know that there is a line in order to get vouchers on weekends. The weekdays are usually just drive in to the staging areas but on weekends and holidays they have a voucher system that lets you in at say 9-12 or 12-3. Guys please elaborate and correct me but from my memory thats how it still operates

The recreation passport is just the state park pass but associated to the vehicle tag and cheaper. You can still get the state park stickers and use that.

See thats just it.. I have dealer plates, which are not registered to specific cars, so I would not be able to get those recreation passports I don't think.

Are state park stickers just like ORV stickers, just something you buy that isn't actually associated with a specific vehicle?

Just pay at the gate for $10. They will give you a little blue sticker to put on the windshield. Have fun!!

Sweet. So you don't think they will give me any hassle? Thanks.

It will be 10 for state park sticker and 15 for ORV pass for each vehicle then?

Dune buggies, dirt bikes and ATVs need a state park sticker also.

(anything that enters needs both, orv and state park pass)

The passport isnt nessicelly attached to your rgistration. Its just an option at the sos. The sticker you put in the windshiled at the park is the same thing.

So I was reading on the dnr and sos site some more and it led me to believe that the state park stickers are not available to purchase anymore.. just the Recreation Passport.

Has anyone purchased the state park sticker up at silver lake recently, like this summer?

I will call them this week but I was not able to get through all last week for some reason.

You are over thinking the whole thing. Recreation Passport is replacing the park stickers. Just head up there and pay at gate, no problems...

Short Summary:

EVERY vehicle you take needs a Rec Passport. NO EXCEPTIONS!
(Truck, ATVs, Dune Buggy, etc.) IF it enters the park it has to have one.

ONLY vehicles going INTO THE SAND need an ORV tag and a dune FLAG.

I assumed he would be testing the 4 wheel drive on some dealer vehicals, and was wondering what dealer he worked at.

Ha. I was waiting for a ridiculous comment like that. Dealers pay big bucks to the state to be licensed and operate as a business. We more than heavily pay our way. We also bring in a shit ton of revenue for the state in for sales tax that would otherwise be avoided in a private party sale.

Lastly, dealers don't have personal vehicles, ever. It would be completely assanine. I don't work for any dealership either, I own and operate a small dealership and all the vehicles are mine.

Thanks for going off topic and sounding like an idiot.

Ya? So what?

I have never been up there and wanted to make sure I will be able to purchase the needed stickers for whatever I bring up there.

Who cares? It kills me how judgemental people are.

Thanks to all the guys who provided actual useful information.

Drive there and hand them money. They will take care of you. Dont worry. Just make sure you have cash, it is a very easy system and it will all be cleared up when you get up here. Have fun and be careful.
