Yup. pretty much my first thought when these dinks were suggesting I go to BC for a visit. I love places that look the same as the states but have horrible gun laws and higher expense levels.

Went to get an enhanced drivers license so I could go to Canada Labor Day weekend. Thought I had my birth certificate, but apparently not. Just ordered it from Ohio, it takes 3-6 fukcing weeks to get a copy from them once you order it.

NAFTA rules state you need a letter from the company to go to another country for temporary work. No different from a Canadian coming here for a meeting. You screwed up and blame the government...Man up and admit it.

Bullshit. If he's going for a sales meeting he doesn't need a work permit. I've been through the same thing before. Even though I do a ton of technical sales support, my title leads them to believe that I am doing service work, therefore, I never give my title. Or, even consultation can require a work permit which is total bullshit since you aren't doing any work. Just simply giving advice at no charge. If the customer were paying for it, I would agree.

So, bloocheese, if you were going to a sales meeting, what did you say that triggered the questioning? Or were you dressed like a service tech?

Just because they let you in without a letter does not mean it was completely legit. The fact is you need a company letter to work in another country under NAFTA. Before NAFTA they did not have to let you in at all. As an American you can not work in Canada without government permission, just like a Canadian or Mexican can not work in the US without the government doing the same. Going to a meeting is work or seeing a customer is work.

HE'S NOT PERFORMING ANY WORK........... HE'S GOING TO A SALES MEETING. You do not need a work permit for sales efforts.

I have been in the same situation. I got stopped because my customer wanted me to be there while they were running our product. No physical work of any kind. It takes an act of God to convince them that you are only going to be having a discussion.

I was told the day before by canadian immigration I did not need paper for sales. What triggered it was the bazillion other crossings for service.

And I would rather go through Mexico's immigration, fill out a 3x5 card and you're in.

Germany, I just showed my passport. When I walked to France there wasn't even any border guards.

Problem now, this is the second time refused, one more and I may be banninated.

"World's friendliest border" my ass.

BTW, i'm in Cananananada now, no problem going over for startup and training, even with a car full of tools.

Wouldn't it help if you crossed using a different car/license plate that they don't have multiple records of? I know that doesn't help the passport thing, but when I've crossed, the guards barely looked at my license. It is the car tag that gets run every time, and when it is flagged with many crossings, that is when they start hassling you I think....

I travel to Canada pretty regular. Although the questions are different when I am on vacation versus work, they always look closely at the screen after swiping my passport. If he's on any form of watch alert, they know it and the license plate won't help him.

Agree. My corporate used to be in Toronto and I would always say I had a meeting to attend. NEVER SAY IM GOING FOR WORK!!!! It all about the terminology you use to explain why you are crossing over.
