Default Chrysler 300-looking to buy..opinions?

my local dealer has two 300's I'm interested in.

One is a 2008 3.5 touring, 4-speed auto, 53k

One is a 2007 Hemi, 78k, 5-speed auto, 78k

I could go either way. I've heard the 300's came with shitty front end parts, which I can live with replacing things like that.

I'm more concerned about the transmissions and other problem areas. I've never had one, nor known anybody that has.

Anything I should look for or be worried about long term with either one?

My dad has an 06 or 07 with the 3.5. He loves it, great power and decent mileage. He's only had it a year or so tho. I was a bit surprised he bought it being he was a die hard ford guy.

Cars are great! I had an01 300m with the 3.5 that I put over 200k on and it still got 28 mpg when I traded for an 06 300C No issues at all! the hemi is awsome! i worked at a Dodge dealership for 6 yrs and was there when the style changed and both are great cars. The old ones would wear out cradle bushings and at the time they were dealer only and not cheap. Go for the Hemi, you'll love it. It should have the ESP control system and really is a fun car to drive. Chryslers are imo the most reliable cars around. You can drive a honda accord cheaper, but you can drive that 300 just as long with as little work. Enjoy

What makes you concerned about the transmission?

Behind the engine, most of the drivetrain is all Daimler sourced parts.

Up thru 2007 the 3.5 had a 5 speed mercedes auto, 2008+ got the old 4 speed 42re unless it was AWD. The driveability of the 5 speed is much better imo, i had a 2008 charger and the 4 speed auto was a dog. My dad had an 07 same except for 5 speed auto and it was noticable. Hemis all have the 5 speed auto. Both of ours went thru tie rods and "tension struts" in the front end, but I would buy another in a heartbeat. BTW he now has a 2011 with the new v6, what a sweet ride...

Probably because it's a Chrysler....

Don't get me wrong, my old man is retired from Chrysler and that's just about all I've ever owned...but they aren't known for bulletproof transmissions.

Best advice yet. Get a 3.5, if and only if it has the 5speed. Otherwise get the HEMI, the mileage wouldn't concern me.

I've had 10+ LX cars as field cars and personally I own a 2008 Magnum RT with Road & Track. My mother has 70,000 miles on a 2006 SRT8 Charger.

We've both had every problem under the sun imagineable but, YES, I'd buy another one. I'm a bigger guy and these fit great, especially with no sunroof.

Before 75,000 miles:
The suspension either has, or will need to be replaced, including struts, tie rod ends, and anything else that makes it cycle up/down or left right other than the rack.

The TIPM Sensor (Someone correct me) is known to go out frequently.

The touchscreen radios suck ass, their reliability is second to last, unless it's a 2010 or new. For some reason they figured it out then. My Grand Cherokee radio used to get so hot you could keep your coffee warm on the dash.

Back to LX cars, the rotors warp if you drive a lot, but the pads last forever if you don't mind them squeeling. I replaced my rotors and pads and calipers, they all suck from MOPAR, even the "BREMBO" from MOPAR suck ass, the calipers lock up and the again even the BREMBO shit warps and squeels. BTW I replaced mine with Wilwood, a $4,000 upgrade but worth every penny.

The lug nuts are a piece of shit. Trust me, replace them or forever be stuck on the side of the road because the PLASTIC yes PLASTIC cap MOPAR installs on the end of an open face lug nut bloats and you can't get the factory lug wrench on. Buy Gorilla lugs, I have the part # if you want, they are about $30 for an entire set of 20, I bought them off Amazon. The LX cars take a special Acorn shape so buyer be-aware.

The transmissions are suprisingly good, a lot of guys mod the 5speed and it'll handle some power. Only the SRT had shifting issues, which a TSB took care of. The sometimes leak fluid out the rear output shaft.

The HEMI runs hot, buy a 180 thermostat, your check engine light will go off, but it's worth the car running cooler.

The 3.5L for some reason in the LX burns oil. I'd buy the HEMI they are probably the same price at the dealership.

The seats blow, you can buy Katzskin reskin for like $1,000 bucks.

But yes, again, I'd buy one.

The older LH body 3.5 was a good engine. The LX 3.5 does burn oil and yes you want the Hemi for the better trans and the power. with the MDS the milage is about the same. I think the seats are fine. the LH body seats were better yeah. Like going from an old Durango R/T to the current body Durango, more plastic and less polish & posh. Still a very nice interior all around and I think all the Hemi package have the better two-tone lether upgrade. All cars have things that go wrong and everyone can find faults in a car, but when all is said these are very nice cars. By the way, I went to Napa and got new rotors and pads that were for the SRT/8(Napa brand) and they have yet to warp. If they do, they are free replacements and only cost me two hundred something, not four grand

One of these days I will sell a car to somebody on this forum!

Here is my car:
http://www.teamhodgeschryslerdodgeje...fa951d343f.htm

Here are the two you are looking at:
http://www.oharachryslerdodgejeep.co...b26e13df84.htm
http://www.oharachryslerdodgejeep.co...0009432aa4.htm

Mine is a Chrysler Certified Vehicle, Limited, One Owner, New Tires, and AWD. Even if you are not interested in my car you can use it to negotiate a deal on the one you are looking at

I can't personally say anything about the HEMI in this body style since I haven't driven one. I can tell you the new 300 is an amazing car! Unfortunately, no amazing deals at this point.

FWIW the one my old company had, the front end parts were replaced 4 times before 36,000 miles. It drove like shit too.

Tension struts and tie rods go out. Rear axle seals leak quite a bit. Transmissions have been good, but sometimes see valve/spring problems on 3.5's,but you might as well get the HEMI any way.

As with any car,you will get issues depending on how it was taken care of and driven. My mom bought an 06 Charger HEMI and put 30k on with NO issues. The second owner now has 60k on it and no repairs other than maintenance.

I ended up getting the 07 with the Hemi. A guy up the street from me is a retired mechanic/driver from the proving grounds..he more or less pushed me in that direction over the v6/4 speed.
