Default surround sound input needed

I have a small living room with a 42" flat screen and I am looking for input on some speakers to replace the ones I lost in the divorce. I had a set of BOSE Companion 3 hooked up, and I really like the way it sounded. It was a small setup with a sub, but intended for a computer more than a TV. It was also nice because I could hook up my smartphone/laptop/ipod to the aux input and play music over the speakers.

So..... I have looked at a bunch of setups online and in stores. Now I need your feedback. I don't want to spend $500 on a huge system... just looking to replace what I had.

What do you recommend?

Thanks
SBC

Wow....I totally lost that bet. I though I would have gotten some flak for losing a speaker system in a divorce

Stay away from Onkyo from ABC warehouse and the other big box stores. Had a HTiB and it quit working after a year, less than 10 hours total usage. The only way to have it repaired is to send it in to their "Authorized repair facility" and they won't sell you the boards separate to fix it yourself.

Same happened on the Panasonic system my folks had. Repair man said it would cost more to repair than replace.

You could always buy my RCA system. Some 5.1 thing I've been using. I've got to put a new cooling fan in it though, the bearing in the one in it is shot, just makes a lot of noise.
