cops entering buildings

So long story short. Can a cop enter a building if a door is open but no alarm is going off.
My wife was at work today, and a back door ended up being open. Next thing she heard a door opening, so she gets up heads out of her office and there is a cop. He said that he has seen the door open in the past at night and has entered the building to check things out, again with no alarm going off. Is he allowed to do this?

Sounds like reasonable cause to me. I would feel good about that myself, he is actually taking the initiative to make sure everyone is ok.

x2 All cops are great people, as such they should be allowed to enter any building at any time.

This is a stupid question, cops are above the law, so legality doesn't matter.

I have had this happen to me a few times at my dads shop after hours too. It scares the poo out of you at first! It's nice to know they are actively trying to deter crime like that.

It doesn't really matter when you or Honcho answer shit like this around here. People bitch either way; Complain that cops came in to check it out, or complain they didn't do their job if it was found B&E'd the next mornng.

makes me wonder why more people don't become cops? I mean after all it seems like everyone already knows how to do the job anyways, so that might as well get paid for it!!

I think it's a good sign. Making sure everything is ok.

I worked at night as a Janitor at a Golf course last summer. 12 Midnight - 6Am every night. They would come by and check things out. Scared the crap out of me when they did though. I often didn't see them come up on me intill they were right there. Being alone in a huge building in the middle of a golf course at night can play some pretty creepy tricks on you.
