Default gripe

I hate it when i spend 3 days trying to get 54ksi steel flat, and the best I get is a 4 foot long wave- on a 5 foot long part.

I'm drinking to forget

Yeah, I hate when that happens to me too. It's happened more times than I can remember. Probably too many beers after and that's why I can't remember.

I blew a hose on a big hydraulic jack today and got both a whipping and a money shot. It was tons of fun.

Not my steel. I just work for the company that builds the feed equipment.

Found out today that the steel mill ran the flat blanks they are using off of this very coil- through a straightener nearly identical to ours. I spent today verifying alignment and squareness of the equipment- all within specs, if fact the worst thing I found was .006" over 60".

Steel goes into a laser cutter, it must be flat within 1mm for the laser to cut properly. The line will be making water heater tanks for a VERY large company, this job means $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ for my employer so not too much pressure on me.....

Worst part is, we are straightening 75KSI material with the same type of equipment for another customer with no issues, and they are a supplier to Mercedes Benz.....

I know there's maybe 3 people here know what I'm talking about- but I would trust their opinions over googlesearch any day.

Who's leveler do you have? What kind of line? We supply backups, work rolls, rebuild levelers, etc. and do service work. Is this already CTL, slit or just blanked? Gauge?

Is this an A36 coil? What condition? Hot band, galv, pickled? From who?

First, it's a straightener, not a leveler- it's from CHS (my employer) and it's a 7 roll with 4" dia rolls on 8" centers.
I'm not sure who the steel supplier is, but I can find out. It's 40" wide x .071 coil, we just need to get the coil set out. Eagle (IIRC) cut the test blanks from this very coil.

Monday I am going to be able to talk to the operator that cut the blanks, perhaps I can get some insight into why this isn't working for me. According to the records, they straightend the stock on a Stampco 7 roll straightner with no head or tail scrap- so it's just me that's missing something here.

How deep are you plunging? What plastic do you think you are getting? 4" rolls on 8" centers is pretty loose for .071". Did CHS manufacture the straightener? (most people don't know the difference) Who made the steel doesn't really matter but I was curious.

Just as some insight, we just commissioned our new leveler at Nucor steel.
.187-.625
up to 240KSI (yes, you read it right)
11 rolls
5.25 on 5.50 centers
2000 ton machines
real time roll bending

All this is supposed to do is remove coil set, we have probably hundreds of these out in customer's hands with no issues. I started with the general 50% and 75% of material thickness on the first two rolls an about .020 on the third. Went all the way to -.250 -.125 -.071 and it started walking sideways.

We built the entire feed line, only thing farmed out was controls done by Morrell as customer needed some interconnections that aren't in I n d r a m a t ' s standard rollfeed package.

Today, our guy who built the straightener came out, we disassembled it and reassembled after inspection. Found that there was some deformation of the assembly being shipped from Detroit to Germany, shimmed a mounting bracket for a piloting cylinder that was bottomed out and twisting the break roll assembly slightly. Tomorrow we try again, hopefully we found the root source.

The guys at Morrell are good guys. Need any work rolls or backups?
