UAW leader asks industry to cooperate with labor
TRAVERSE CITY — United Auto Workers President Bob King is calling on industry leaders to reject what he says is a multi-billion-dollar campaign to destroy organized labor.
Speaking to a conference of vehicle and parts manufacturers Thursday in Traverse City, Mich., King said the union is sincere in its push for a more cooperative relationship with management. He said workers realize that the only way they'll get job security and better pay is if their companies become more profitable.
He added that the UAW's turn away from the confrontational model of old depends on companies doing likewise.
King said it will take courage for corporate leaders to resist peer pressure and work with unions instead of trying to weaken them. He said companies with strong unions will flourish in the long run.
