That's the idea, isn't it? They are a limited production vehicle--I know that the dealership I just purchased my new car from has a long list of buyers but gets very few cars. I sat in their demo and I have to say it is far sexier than I would have imagined.

x2.

It's still on limited release. Also keep in mind that the Detroit-Hamtramck plant has been shut down for almost a month now for retooling and upgrades. Your article is leaving out a lot of information.

Right now it's all about learning the issues on the car and having a higher focus on quality control. Be ready for the flood gates in the next few years on production of these vehicle.

Personally I feel it's another wasted development by GM. It's all about feeling good but not actually looking at the end value of the car or more importantly, where the engergy is coming from. I don't know the exact stats but much of Michigan based electricity comes from burning coal.

I hope Ford does better with the electric focus.

Nobody is considering the cost on the infrastructure when more and more of these plug-in cars come home at 3-6pm and plug in to recharge. During the summer, those are the super peak hours of the day. Adding additional demand at those times, at best, jacks the price of power up. At worst, it causes power outages and rolling brownouts. Nobody stops to think about the impact of this crap.

WTF is with chevy and the horrible graphics they feel the hybrids/elecs need?

I shudder every time I see the volt with "volt" written down the side in 2 foot tall letters at the dealer.

Plus the hybrid suburbans, it only says hybrid on it like 10 times.

Any idea why the plant already needs upgrading? Seems like GM could have foreseen that prior to production.

I saw a Volt similar to this one a couple weeks ago.

Because many of the people buying these things want to be seen as environmentalists. It's not about saving gas, it's about being seen saving gas.

I read an article a while ago about one of the hybrid SUV's where the writer complained that it didn't look like a hybrid.

Environmentalists?!!!!!

Lets see.

Buy electric car with batteries

Ni based batteries are a known carcinogen

The batteries are toxic to produce and recycle

Charging your electric car requires a fossil fuel power plant that doubtfully has exhaust emission filters.

Ride a bicycle if you want to be a real environmentalist

Since when did the government or American public ever think about things like THAT?

The plant produces other cars as well. Those as being phased out and volt production increased. It sound like it was all part of the plan.

The extra tooling and infrastructure involves a lot of work when upping production, especially when doubling it.

The Opel Ampera is starting production which is the Volt export. Also, the 2013 Malibu will be starting production there soon. That vehicle will also be split with Fairfax, Kansas.
