Default opinion on truck needed...

I'm looking at a '02 F-250 4 door lariat powerstroke. Looks to be well taken care of. It has 212K on it. Should I be scared of the miles? Anything else to look for?

212k isn't a lot to diesel, but it's still a lot to a transmission.

Ask about trans maintenance and check oil pan for rust, they get thin with age. Miles would not scare me though

my truck has 199k on it. F350, appears to have been worked pretty hard for the 180k before I bought it. It's got a new trans, could use some little shit (shocks, sway bar bushings, etc), otherwise pretty solid.

Miles wouldn't scare me too much.

Bones knows these trucks pretty well.

The power lock actuators go bad on these trucks, at least all the ones I looked at.

The rear calipers seem to like to freeze up, $100 a pop.

They don't get 40 mpg on 44" boggers towing 10k pounds like everyone says they do.

They are super comfy on long road trips (imo) but cumbersome as hell to drive around town daily.

They eat batteries and starters.

Skooterbuilt can't keep his running.

Bones stopped buying 7.3's and got a 6.0

trailrail has the beauty of all 7.3's

chevotass's 7.3 is all lifted and cool and shit.

Hancho's gets bad mileage.

sandvipers is for sale and has 274k, clean truck.

mine has a dent. or two.

cummins are way better trucks.

ford sucks

chevy is awesome.

2005 F350 Diesel, 4x4, crewcab, longbed, 6 speed manual, $14200 - Great Lakes 4x4. The largest offroad forum in the Midwest

For the price of clean 7.3L diesels, I will never buy one again. They break just like every other truck (I mean the truck themsleves, not just the motor).

The ride on a 2005+ superduty is awesome. It puts the pre 2004 trucks to shame in both comfort and turning radius, which is important for any sort of city driving/parking/towing. Screw leaf spring front ends. Screw paying $15K for a 10 year old truck with 150+K miles on it.

Check the lockouts, the oil pan itself, the rear speed sensor and the diesel fuel filter, along with the alternator, batteries, radio and locks and windows, oh and make sure the rear doors lock and unlock with out human intervention.

Mine is all fixed now; mix of bad can sensor, corroded main power feed and broken glow plug relay caused all my problems. Mine will soon be as pretty as DJ's, like when I bought it. I currently DD my Super Duty and have no issues getting around town.

What is the price on it? Miles dont mean anything if it was taken care of. No matter what kind you get with that kinda mileage you will be fixing it.

I looked at a bunch of them....they are decent trucks....the miles are not an issue for the motor. In the end I bought a cummins...simpler, cheaper, and starts better when cold......that was huge for me since I cant plug it in at work...several times last winter I watched a coworkers 7.3 refuse to start or really struggle....mine never missed a beat.

My truck hates the cold start wayy worse than my chevy ever did. The seats in the chevy were more comfortable. We added airbags suspension to mine and it improved the ride quality to about the same as my chevy.
I love my truck but it definitely isnt as nice as either of our duramaxes.

something is wrong with your truck.

Once I put fresh batteries in my truck it fired right up last winter every day I needed it to start with zero issues.

my mileage problem is fixed...mostly. While I don't get as good as DJ's empty I get better than he does towing...but I avg 14-15mpg and that includes towing
