K1500 pitman arm, whats the trick?

My newly aquired '98 K1500 needs a new pitman arm. I tried to do one on a 2wd once with no luck and the shops what a small fortune to do one. One place told me the whole steering box needs to come out to do it. Anybody ever done one, any tips, tricks???

you have to pull the steering box, and steering shaft. you will need a pitman arm puller to remove it.

The pitman arm nut tends to get a good rust buildup on those. A flat file will help knock the rust off so you can get a socket on it. I would use an impact to remove the nut, although I have done it with a large breaker bar and alot of complaining.

It is not that hard.. 3 bolts hold the box to the frame and 1 bolt for the steering shaft.. ( be sure not to rotate the steering shaft when disconnected or you can damage the clock spring for the air bag.) Remove the pitman arm from the centerlink. Rotate the box to the side and remove nut for pitman arm and install your puller. Remove your old arm and install the new one. Reverse procedure for install.

FYI I charge $75 labor on one..
