Unhappy Keep right except to pass law....WHERE DOES IT APPLY?

So checking on the wonderful internet, you get many answers. So is the keep right excect to pass for limited access roads only? Does it apply to m59 from Pontiac to Highland? Elizabeth lk rd? Rochester rd? Or just the freeway/expressways?

The whole reason behind this is an asshole state cop telling me I need to get out of the left lane on 59 in White lk. While I was doing the speed limit. Beside the fact we were going to make a left into the bar we were heading to. Not anti cop or anything, but give me an f'n brake. That big of a hurry to get back to the station at 8pm. Use the f'n lights if you want me out of the way.

So when does this law apply?

It is illegal to go over the speed limit, even to pass. In order for anyone to need to pass you, they would have to be exceeding the speed limit (a crime). So if you were to move over from the left lane so that a speeder (a criminal) could pass and continue speeding (committing said crime), you are technically aiding and assisting in a crime.

Shove that in the "I AM THE LAW, AND THIS IS WHAT IT IS" cop's face.

I'm very curious if the Trooper was a 28 year old from Bay City, assigned to the Groveland Post, that still has not finished writing/filing the crash report from two weeks ago...

Shaved head, maybe mid 30's. really wasn't paying attention to him until he pulled up along side of me to tell me I need to be in the right lane while doing the speed limit. I was paying more attention to the cars that were out tonight.

To my understanding this law only applies while driving on the freeway and if traffic is heavy you can drive in either lane. Maybe our resident dick head cop can clear this up because there seems to be a lot of gray areas...I do know someone who received a ticket for traveling in the passing lane but it was on the freeway, very light traffic and the cop was following him for about 5 miles before he pulled him over.

I got pulled over for this by a state cop on grand river inbetween howell and brighton. Said the left lane was only for passing and making a turn within a mile or something. was quite interested in finding out if i smoked trees as well

No surprise there! Most of the Bay City LEO's take pride in other peoples' misery.

I'm curious too. Not because I travel in those lanes all that often but because I can't stand the idiots that just drive in that lane. "I'm going one mile an hour faster then you and I'll take that full 10 miles to pass you".

Pretty sure it applies to all roads. It's something I've always heard/been taught.

It applies to all roads, all the time, 7 days a week. Get your old ass out the way!

First off no one would pass me--because the cop was on my ass. So they were cars next to me. Should I pulled into the left turn lane to let the asshat by?

Left lane = passing lane.

Drives me batty when someone lollygags in the fast lane.....yes I have a bit of roadrage at times, but it's seriously not that difficult of task.
If you aren't passing someone, move over.

People who hang out in the left lane should be fed to the lions.

http://www.michigan.gov/msp/0,1607,7...3839--,00.html

Question: Is it against the law to drive in the left lane when not passing another vehicle?

Answer: Here is what MCL 257.634 has to say about lane driving.

If the road has 2 or more lanes in one direction, vehicles shall be driven in the extreme right-hand lane. If all lanes are occupied by vehicles moving in substantially continuous lanes of traffic then a driver can use any lane available. A driver may also use the left lane for a reasonable distance when preparing for a left turn.

On a freeway having 3 or more lanes, a driver may use any lane lawfully available.

MCL 257.642 gives further direction and states in part, "…Upon a roadway with 4 or more lanes which provides for 2-way movement of traffic, a vehicle shall be driven within the extreme right-hand lane except when overtaking and passing, but shall not cross the center line of the roadway except where making a left turn.

1ST OFF DID NOT GET A TICKET. If you know the road its 5 lanes not a freeway and very busy. So leaving a light with 20 other cars we should all pull into the right lane to let a cop by. Like I stated NO ONE would pass me! Read the post before you reply. Normally you sit through 3 lights at cresent lk rd and m59. So if everyone was in the right lane it might take all night to get through the intersection. I am the 1st one to bitch about people on the e-way in the left, but I will do 10 over on the freeway. Not a left lane driver unless passing! This isn't a freeway of limited acess road! Some of you really need to learn you are not that important and the road isn't yours Just like the ashole in a pos escort Thursday night that does think you need to stop at a red light to make a right turn.

Thank you for finding that. So that proves the cop was an asshole.
