Default Transfering and selling of a trailer. Any advice?

long story short. I purchased a large jetski trailer two years ago (7/04/09) simply for the ease of moving some jetskis around in my barn, and storing them on it. I never needed a plate on it, so I never registered it at the SOS. I have the bill of sale, and the registration from the previous seller.

Well, I realized the above paragraph last night when I sold two jet skis and the trailer, and the guy is coming over at 4:30pm today to pick everything up (already gave me large deposit). So is my stupidity going to ruin this deal, or can I just show up at the SOS with a two year old BOS and the registration and get the trailer registered to me without having to pay for a plate? Even if I have to pay for a plate, I can save the deal.

thx

But I have a registration with the previous owners name on it. That means its registered to Michigan as having Akbar ******* owning the trailer. When I sign a new bill of sale, and they go to the SOS to get a plate, won't they wonder how akbar's trailer was never registered, and somebody else signed off on the sale?

at that point it might be easier to just put it in your name before the sale.

i don't think you can register it without getting a plate though.

Maybe providing the buyer with a letter explaining the situation would help? When we transferred my wife's Trailblazer to our names a few years ago from her parents, her Dad wrote a letter saying he was transferring it to both of us. Technically an immediate family member can only transfer to another immediate family member for a $1, not including in-laws. The SOS lady accepted it.

Just a thought. I'm sure this trailer situation isn't the first time the SOS has run into this type of situation.

Boat trailers are weird. They are either registered to the Jet Ski/Boat or they are registered by themselves using a weight slip, well that is what the SOS lady told me when I went to register mine. I didn't want it registered to the ski, so I didn't register it.

I think if you just did a BOS you will be fine.

Bill of sale, he may have to get a weight slip when he goes in.

If you have a SOS on your side of the state that can do an instant title just go get one. Then you don't have to worry about sounding like when he comes to pick it up.

HAHAHAHAHA
Dummy!!!

This is EXACTLY what almost killed the sale of my go-fast.

Take the bill of sale (I didnt have this) to SOS. You will have to register it, but not plate it. Then you can sell it.

I remember you laughing at me saying "you can't sell something you don't own".

When I bought my jet boat years ago I had an actual title from the state of Tennessee where it was made, sign ready to be transferred into my name. the lady at the SOS looked at it and handed it back saying its just a trailer and you don't need that. Registered it as an assemble trailer with no title. So basically its just luck of the draw whether or not you get someone bhind the counter that is lazy.

Just bought a car for stepson over weekend, went monday to transfer title and plate, she never asked for proof of insurance.

Ok, just left the SOS. Basically it is completely legal to jump titles/registrations on trailers as long as they are not used on a public road because then you wouldn't have a plate. She told me to just type out a bill of sale stating that I never registered the trailer because it was used on private property and it would be sufficient. If I didn't have the current registration with a copy of the weight, the purchaser would need to get a slip from a weigh master
