Make sure it turns on. If it doesn't, I would not buy it.

I would also check to make sure that it hasn't been paused with gay porn DVD's in the DVD player for long periods of time. I hear that images can get burnt in to the screen. Well, that is, unless you're cool with looking at a shadow of gay porn all the time.

You could always buy the tv, take the batteries from the remote, then sell the TV.

Free batteries!!!!

Why not just take the batteries when you are testing the TV and then you get them free anyways AND you can call the guy a jew for trying to screw you out of batteries.

Thats a better idea.
Also try to get a cup of lemonade while you are looking at the TV. You can steal the batteries while they are getting the lemonade.

So....free batteries and free lemonade!

I like lemonade.

Good point to check if it turns on. I had not thought of that.

What is a remote. All of my tv's had the dials you adjust. I have heard of a extreme luxury model the has a wired control.

you will be able to see burn in (if any) right away. Make sure the tv doesnt take a long time to get a picture up after you turn it on.

I would have a DVD player handy to be able to test all of the inputs to make sure they all work.

Honestly with today's TV prices as low as they are I wouldn't buy a used TV let alone a used plasma.

From what I've saw people want damn near the cost of a new one. So unless its a stupid deal I'd pass without even wasting my time.

Just my .02 though...

Ditto. New prices have come down significantly and at least you'll also get the peace of mind of the manufacturer's warranty.

I couldn't tell you the technical specs on TVs, but I look at all kinds of TVs everyday, personally, I think the plasma picture sucks, compared to what you pay. The old DLP looks better to me. Plasma has a weird background and they always seem to take forever to turn on

x2 on the burn thing, many a tv has some kind of burned in background picture; usually a game of some sort

DO NOT BUY IT!!!! Unless you are planning on heating your room with it. I have one that is 5 years old and I hate it. The picture is just is not near the quality of what I see in the stores. Spend the extra $, you will thank me later.

My plasma may put off heat, but not enough to make a difference in the temp of the room, and I have a 720p 50" and the picture is awesome, just like in the stores, but when I had comcrap the picture looked like it was non HD. I am happy I didn't pay the extra $4-500 for a TV that wasn't any better. Also, shop around, you can find Plasma's cheap, usually not worth saving $150-200 to get a used plasma as apposed to new.

I am educated in the ways of the force. Walk into a big retail store, look at all the TV's and find the one with the darkest picture, 9 times out of 10, that will be the plasma. I's much rather have an LCD or LED.

Well that's why.. The damned thing is 5+ years old. The newer ones run much cooler.

You do realize that the store settings are just that, store settings. Every manufacturer knows that their TVs will be sitting on a wall competing with 30-40 other TVs. They also know that when you're looking at a wall of TVs, your eye is drawn to the brighter one. It's a COMMON retail trick to jack up the brightness of a TV that needs to get out the door. Also, the brightest picture, more often than not, does NOT have the truest color. Plasmas have excellent color.

IMO, if you have the room setup for a plasma TV (dark/basement with little to no natural lighting) then it's an excellent choice. What a lot of people forget is that a plasma has a glass screen. There's a huge glare on it if there's any light in the room.

As I think someone mentioned, plasmas are dirt cheap these days. It's out with the old, in with the new, except plasmas aren't going out any time soon. They're just making them cheaper and cheaper. Don't buy a used one when you can find a new 42" for $500 or right around there. I haven't looked at prices in a good while but that's what it was before.

Most people agree that Panasonic makes the best plasma, Samsung having a close second. That's all personal preference.

FWIW, I've known plasmas to last up to 10 years. A friend of mine had one that was 7 years old, still going strong. His basement flooded so he lost the TV but had it not been for that, he'd still be using it. IMO, the life of a LCD/LED isn't nearly as long.
