Umm, its an electric assist. All the mechanical linkages are still there.

really? I didn't know ford used electric steering on anything?

or do you mean the EPAS? electric power assist?

EPAS and electric steering are different.

you still have a mechanical linkage to the rack, you just don't have any hydraulic fluid. Instead its an electric motor giving assist.

steer by wire is different and I could be wrong, but I don't think its even in any production cars in the states.

edit:Haggar went with the short and sweet answer and beat me... oh well.

I thought I read there is no power steering pump being driven by the motor to help with fuel mileage. Isnt it an electric motor driving the steering box?

Maybe I read the arwrong wrong, I've been drunk a lot lately

In a hydraulic assist like whats on my 09 F150, its a mechanically driven rack and pinion, with a hydraulic system to help.

In a elecitric assist like whats on the new Ecoboost F150, its a mechanically driven rack and pinion, with an electric system to help.

There's no power steering pump. But that doesn't mean there's no mechanical linkage.

There's mechanical linkage: instead of using high pressure hydraulics to assist, it uses an electric motor. More efficient.
