Default Motorcycle Turn Signals

Just picked up a pair of 80s yamahas for 900 bucks. 82 Maxim 750, 83 Virago 500..

The maxim is in great running condition, but is missing a bunch of parts (both bikes have been driveway dropped multiple times) with several more beaten up parts...i.e. brake lever, missing passenger foot pegs and such. As the virago won't be ridden for a while (going to be the next step from the 250 rebel my mom is riding) I've been able to steal some parts, from the but both bikes are missing front turn signal parts, and the 750 is completely missing them. I have yet to put a new rear tire on the 750, until I get it out and make sure everything else is functional.

Without the front signal load, the rear signals don't flash, they are just solid, so its apparent that its either all or nothing. so,,,

Are turn signals required in michigan? If not, is SIGNALING required? i.e. flashers aren't, but hand signals would be required without signals.

Anyone know what some good options for CHEAP signals are? I'm having trouble swallowing the 82-specific factory signal ebay price of 30-40 per side.

I have nothing to add, except that I hate it when the fuckers use hand signals... I am ignorant and refuse to learn what they mean.

I think in michigan,as the law is written ,if your bike came with turn signals from the factory,it needs them to be legal.I ride a wr 250 (dirt bike) on the street all the time , using hand signals and it's legal, but im always worried about people who dont have a clue what im doing, and could kill me even if im "legal". Most cops dont know whats legal and what isn't (who can blame them) ,so I wouldnt worry about front turn signals, but watch your back.

There's also EMC cycle in yale.

BTW, they are required if the bike was originally equipped, but I've had a few without and never had a problem. YMMV

Turn signals are pretty easy to find, it's the mounting stems that you can't ever find, and usually the most expensive part.

If you aren't hung up on cosmetics, the cheap auto store marker lights can be used as turn signals.

I have been afraid of this, when I had to use signals. But I am not afraid of Monkeybiz, rather people who don't drive worth a chit either.

ALSO... the scrap yard ideas are good to know. thx

I still have the stock wiring and mounting stems, someone just unbolted the originals and pulled them out of the wiring, same with the rears but the rears were bolted back on when I bought it....

Got it on the road today, after tracing a stumbling throttle to a clogged and oil-covered air filter...unfortunately after fixing that, the idle was ~800rpm, and every time I let off the throttle to slow or stop, it died....hopefully got that fixed...

That short ride has reminded me that my commute to work has me on two inclined 4way stops, that front turn signals would be very helpful at.....hmmm

just having trouble swallowing $28 shipped per light (need both obviously) from ebay...

Just sat in the garage and looked at it for a few minutes....I think I'll be able to use the universal "bullet" style turn signals, and bolt them to the headlight housing (rectangular, plastic, lotsa room) for a clean look w/o $40 in mounting hardware or fabbing my own brackets..

You can get them for free. . . Next time you go to the bar just bust a few off the choppers in the parking lot. It'll be cool, trust me.

Sounds like a possibility, I'll have to do some looking around and see if I can't find something that I like better... keep me posted!
