Default front hubs

ok this may be a stupid quesstion, but why do the hubs have auto and lock positions, arn't they just lock and unlock? plz explain!

I think the auto means they will engage when the TC get shifted into 4x4.
I might be wrong.

Auto position is controlled by the 4x4 switch via a vacuum line. In 4x2 it is unlocked in 4x4 hi or low it is locked. Lock is locked...

It can help as a manual override in case the vacuum doesn't work. It can also be helpful when frequently going in and out of 4wd and you don't want the hubs to be constantly engaging and disengaging.
