Default Central AC ?

I know there are some HVAC guys on here, I am hoping one of you can give me some direction here. The condensing unit fan is running just fine, the blower fan is running just fine; but when the compressor kicks in it sounds like a garbage disposal for 2 seconds then stops. Any Ideas? I called the local HVAC people and they are coming Friday...but Jesus it is going to be like 100 all week and the two window units I was able to find still in stock at Home Rapo are not helping much in a 2200 sq house. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a bearing in the compressor or its electric motor has failed. Either that or the motor is shot and its throwing an internal safety switch.

Un hook the wires off the compressor, check for continuity between each terminal and ground, if continuity present, compressor dead! If not, bad starting components and overload.

Use a fan (or fans) to blow the cool air around from the window ac's until you get the main one fixed. Works pretty well doing that at my house.

Not the hyjack your thread as you've already acquired your answer but what does a newer high efficiency compressor unit cost with installation? I have a fairly new ( 3 years ) high efficiency gas furnace and I haven't upgraded the A/C unit yet. The A/C unit is around 16 years old.
