Default Drummond Island Comprehensive Resource Management Plan

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is coordinating the development of the Drummond Island Comprehensive Resource Management Plan (Plan). As part of this process, they have created a Drummond Island Plan Writing Team, which will be comprised of a variety of organizations, agencies, and individuals with an array of interests concerning natural resources and Drummond Island.

The purpose of the Writing Team is to create a Comprehensive Resource Management Plan that would provide resource management recommendations and alternatives that are acceptable within the mandates of the DNR’s mission, while meeting the overall needs of Islanders, DNR, and resource users. The Plan will also focus on strategies for providing quality hunting, fishing, and trapping opportunities, and promote Drummond Island as a special place to attract resource-based tourism. The DNR hopes to have a plan in draft format by late winter 2012. A facilitator will work with the Writing Team and assist members in reaching consensus on the topics and decisions within the Plan. The Plan would be presented to the DNR for final approval.

While there is powerful opposition to motorized use on the island, there is also excellent news in that the ORV community has two strong, pro-motorized members on the Team GLFWDA member and DIORC President, Steve Walker, is one. GLFWDA also has the honor of having Pat Bower sitting on the Team to help ensure that our sport is well represented and not quietly eliminated from the Island.
The first meeting of the team will be this coming Monday on Drummond Island and I hope all of you join in me wishing our representatives good luck. Our future use of the island could not be in better or more capable hands.

I don't quite understand this. We had all the stake holders involved in the ORV route designations 2 (or so) years ago. Now we need somebody on the island committee to assure that it doesn't get changed? Is that the gist of it?

BTW, thankyou to those that continue to do the work.
