Default Don't make the same mistake I did

Call CCTDB NOW and order a back-up Generator!

We flew back from Texas Monday night, came home to no power. Bought generator and wired it in yesterday (tuesday), still no power, they originally said by tonight but no such luck.

Only pissed because I would have rather put the money I just paid for this little 5500 watt genny into a 17kw one or so that was tied into nat gas instead of having to carry gas cans back there to fill it up.

I seriously tried to get CCTDB to install a generator at my business, and my ops manager had a signed blank check (with approval of up to $30k). He never even called my pharmacy.

Our shiny new generator installed by someone else works fantastic though.

Depends how big of generator you go with and the other items in the house that need to run off it. I just got a 10k and my meter is more than big enough, but my house is also newer. I think you run into trouble with some of the older homes.

How many hours of service do the units provide on average with proper maintenance? Someone told me 2000 hrs.

depends on the model. You can just go look at the specs, they list it.

We have a 17k on ours, no issues. Also a gas furnace, water heater, and line to a pool heater.

CC hooked me up with a 17kW a few years ago and it has worked flawlessly.

I'm confused though: I have no Ass Lines routed into my generator - what's an Ass Line any way? Is a bigger one better than a smaller one?

Usually 10kw and under are fine on a typical 175 meter, but it also depends on the feeder line to the house and the high pressure at the road. I still see neighborhoods in Birmingham, Ann Arbor and Holly that operate high pressure at the road <1.5psi which makes it pretty damn impossible to run a 10kw @ 5-7" W.C. no matter what the size of the meter is.

17kw and up usually require a 250 meter, unless there are few gas appliances.

I personally see hack job installations all the time where people tap into a gas meter feed and attach to a 17 or 20kw without doing a gas load calculation. In the summer they are usually fine, but as soon as it's winter, and their furnace and hot water tanks are heating, and a 17kw generator turns on, it will suck the pilots out of furnace or the hot water.
