Default 2000 Ford Exploder experience?

girlfriend is looking for yet another new car, don't ask me why, she is like bones lately, she has changed cars more than I have changed my underwear.

the grand cherokee got totalled, the regular cherokee is too small and uncomfortable won't haul all her work stuff, blah blah blah.

She just drove an eddie bauer exploer, 2000, 100,000 miles. Said the motor makes a slight ticking, seller said they took it in to have it fixed and the dealer said it is a typical tick from the 5.0 v8's and not a big deal.

Can anyone confirm? I haven't heard said ticking in person yet. Kinda like the typical 4.0 jeep tick?

That slight tick will prolly turn into a trashed 4.0 sohc from a shitty timing chain tensioner guide cassette.

way to be a reader.

It's a 5.0 V8, not a 4.0. Congrats.

the 5.0 have a horriable problem with the exhaust manifolds breaking. they crack and the studs break. my dad, my gf and i have all had 5.0 explorers and everyone has had the manifolds leak. headers are ridiculous i want to say 700 or so torque monster is the only company that makes them.

Then I guess it would have a hard time turning into a trashed 4.0

hmmm, ok, manifolds don't look all that expensive, but I wonder how much of a pain in the ass it is to change them?

doesn't sound like a bad deal. the only thing i see when i work on them is typical ball joints and tie rod ends. check the frt end out well. if you have the chance check out the top of the heads to see if any sludge is built up on the rockers and lifters. if its bad pass on it. means lack of gerneral maintenace, also check the t case for proper operation.

My wife has a 98 and I love it. The awd tcase leaves a bit to be desired, but that can be replaced with a none awd style.

Make sure the plugs have been done, seen quite a few were if not changed at mileage they get brittle and can break at removal. The tick is probably just an exhuast leak.

The trannies are pretty decent, more or less an glorified AOD-E (even though not called that).

My wife typically sees 16-18 mpg in town/mild city driving/country type areas.

I like em and have been on the search for one as a mild wheeler to play with. Although I did get the okay to SAS hers .

Yeah, I can see it now, I come strolling up with a tool box and tools and start taking the guys explorer apart in the driveway tomorrow. I'm sure he won't mind when I leave it half a part and decide I am not interested.

16-18 mpg would be great.

I am typically not an explorer fan, espescially of this body style, but the GF likes it, so so be it.

You don't have to take anything apart to check the front. Just a jack. Find a local place that does used car inspections for cheap and get it on a hoist. We do pretty thorough inspections at my shop for $40 approx. To give you an idea.

The key to checking the ball joints is to jack up on the control arm close to the knuckle to keep the susp at normal compression. When the susp. Droops it changes the angle in the joint and can stiffen up the socket not showing any play.

I was referring to the guy who told me to check the heads for sludge.

Ended up buying it, one owner vehicle, 5.0 v8 w/114k on it, looked very well cared for.

Ticking sound was an exhaust leak, engine sounded nice and solid, drove really well, no concerns.

I had a 2000 Explorer. Solid truck, no motor ticking. Only thing about it was the main serp belt/pulley whined. It never stopped. Worse when it was wet out.

Sold it at 185k still running strong. Trans shifted just fine. AWD tcase was okay. Mine still worked just fine, I personally wish I had optional 4WD but the thing was fine for a DD.

Can't remember my mpg average because it was running bigger tires the last few years I had it.

Major problems.. I had to replace to starter, the lock actuators all went bad, all except the driver's door. Latch on the trunk hatch went bad too, but pretty easy to replace all that. Nothing else I can really think of except what I broke by taking it off-road when it's not nearly as strong enough.
