Default Martial Arts and the Law

Are you at a legal disadvantage if you are a black belt, in any school, are forced to defend yourself and obliterate a punk?

This topic came up with some other black belts I know, and I didn't get a straight answer. So the first thing I thought I'd do is ask the GL4x4 legal forum, aka pub.

Any of you happen to know of a story in a similar situation?

black belts by law have to register their hands as weapons, so on one hand you are at a legal disadvantage, but on the other you are always walking around armed so you should be safe

I would think it would depend if you are on the offense or defense. I have been wanting to find a Krav Maga class that is close to home and at a time I could actually commit to attending. I don't care about the law when someone is trying to rob, rape, or murder me. I am going to care more about living.

What kinda school? Grade school? I think today with the whole zero tolerance thing you are always at a disadvantage.

Pretty sure there ain't no law
Totally something I see a bunch of young Chuck Norris wannabee's talking about at the local doejoe

But, if you were in front of a Jury, after severely hurting or killing somebody, I'm sure the defense attorney will love using your "black belt" against you.

False, this is a myth.

This would be a defensive situation. I have heard of several offensive situations where sentences are significantly increased. And you are right, depending on the situation, who cares.

You could defend yourself in prison when they come after your bunghole

ya okay...get pulled over and if they find out you are a black belt and haven't registered your hands as weapons you will be arrested you'll be wishing it was a myth then. You have to go get finger printed, I had to do it and so did everybody else I know with a black belt

Get a cpl and a gun that fits in your pocket, purse etc... Its called CONCEALED carry for a reason. I would lose my job if they ever found out that I was carrying, but jobs are replaceable.

I think Chuck is an 8th degree in TKD. By coincidence, this topic came up during lunch at a seminar I was attending, led by an 8th degree in TKD.

I'd like to see the look on the face of the Sheriff's Department employee you talk to when you go to register your hands and feet.

Do they tattoo the serial numbers? One for each weapon or just one for all? What form do you fill out? What if they run your hand through the system before registering it and it comes back stolen? If you put your hands in your pockets but don't have a CCW permit then what? Can you still go in a bar or do you have to secure your hands in your vehicle first?

So many questions so little common sense.

Bottom line for the OP is that if you are just defending yourself and can articulate that to the investigating officer it shouldn't matter.

That being said cops are no different than any other group, i.e. a certain percentage are ass holes, some are stupid, some don't care but most are good people that will do thier job the best they can.

If you're not an class-A ass hole chances are you will never get in a fight anyways.

I think there are some legalities around that but thanks for being a lawyer.. I would rather just never go outside of my office alone.
