Default Oak Park, garden, 93 days in jail

This belongs in the WTF thread, i think this lady should be commended and the neighbors should start doing the same thing.

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2011/07/08...etable-garden/

A Michigan resident is facing up to 93 days in jail for planting a vegetable garden in her front yard, MyFoxDetroit.com reports.

Julie Bass, of Oak Park, Michigan was first given a warning followed by a ticket and now she is being charged with a misdemeanor for her simple front-yard garden.

"I think it's sad that the City of Oak Park that's already strapped for cash is paying a lot of money to have a prosecutor bothering us," Bass told FOX 2's Alexis Wiley.

The city is claiming that the garden violates a city code which states that front yards must consist of suitable, live plant material to which Bass responds, "We think it's suitable."

"They say, 'Why should you grow things in the front?' Well, why shouldn't I? They're fine. They're pretty. They're well maintained," Bass told the station.

"I could sell out and save my own self and just not have them bother me anymore, but then there's no telling what they're going to harass the next person about," continued Bass.

A pretrial is scheduled for July 26 and a jury trial could be next.

I think by definition that yard consists of suitable, live plant material.. So I doubt that it'll go far..

But its sad to see that that some places dont have anything better to do than harass people like that..

I'm betting that public outcry will end up making the city drop it.

That is crap. I can't believe they would go this far. I hate the idea of the city being able to put people in jail because their lawn is not like other people's. I can understand Cars/car parts but a Garden? Really? I wonder what neighbor complained.

My interwebs is too slow for video, is the house on a corner where it could obstruct the view of an intersection? That would be the only reason for complaint I can think of.

I'm waiting for Ms. Chaffer's opinion.

The people that objected I am guessing are the same people that push for the buy local produce and think they promote a greener earth.

wouldn't it have been easier to get a couple old school buses and park them in the yard , rip off all the tires and let the ninja's paint'em pretty colors? that way when the city drives by and doesn't look twice she can convert them into 40' green houses. outta sight outta mind

She's probably one of those survivalist/prepper types, just waiting for society to collapse.

One of the elementry schools here has a Nature Walk think in the front of the school, they planted a bunch of different plants and trees. It's actually pretty cool for the kids

The school almost had to get rid of it because the old people (yes, they actually are old people) that live across the street were complaining that it is an eye-sore (with they're perfectally manicured lawns, the kind of dicks that think green grass is gold and live on miracle grow). It's bullsh*t that people were complaining about that
