Default 97 burban 700r4

When towing a 7000lb camper with the 5.7 I tow in 3rd gear, I will hit OD on flat spots when I know I can control the throttle to keep the converter locked. The question is does the converter lock up in 3rd gear?
If not I'm guessing its generation a ton of heat when its in 3rd.

A 1997 Burban would have a 4L60E in it , Not a 700R4. And yes the 4L60E should be locking the converter in 3rd.

If you are going to be towing 7000lbs a few wise things you can do that is inexpensive is add a big transmission cooler and change the fluid to Dexron VI.

it has a big cooler on it, I'm afraid to change the fluid since it may make it go kaput.

I never had a tranny go kaput from changing the fluid. I changed mine with over 100k on it and it is doing just fine. I think people that change there fluid and then the transmission goes bad had problems to begin with, people start experiencing problems then change the fluid and it don't help and the transmission goes bad anyway, it is not a cure for existing problems it is preventive maintenance.
