Default Places to camp Up North/U.P.

A friend and I are looking to do a weekend tent-camping trip somewhere within a 7-hour driving radius of Ann Arbor. Preferably Northern Michigan with some sort of scenic drive. Both of us have been to Manistee so a new location would be nice. We'd like to find somewhere that isn't too busy on a normal weekend and has decent hiking trails and possibly places to kayak.

Thanks

Drummond Island has all of the above. I hour from the bridge. 60% state land, and the bay has some great kayaking. Maps are available with routes for just that.

look through this whole thread, there are tons of places. I actually would recommend going to Canada through Port Huron and heading somewhere in the Bruce Penninsula. Anywhere between Owen Sound all the way up to Tobermory.. or even up to Manitoulin Island, but you would want more than a weekend for that.

I would skip drummond and head to the western UP, by the time you ride the ferry, get on the island, etc. Door to door it's just as much time and drummond isn't really all that cool.

Or, tequamenon falls area just north of newberry is pretty awesome and lots of kayaking

Deerfield park in Isabella county is a great place for tent camping. You have to walk over a suspension bridge and carry your stuff about 3/4 mile into the park, so take light limited stuff with you, or a wheel barrow. :)
