Default accelerator pump help

Sorry, I know this sucks, but I have a carb problem.
I have a AMC 360 with a mild cam in it and a holley 670TA. It keeps falling on its face off idle and sometimes backfiring through the carb. I went from a 27 squirter up to a 35 and I'm still having the problem. Do I need to keep going up in size and possibly a 50cc kit? Holley recommends I find the right size squirter before I start messing with cams.
Any help would be appreciated. I watched all the videos on youtube and been trying to dial this thing in for about a year now. (not trying too hard) I just want to see if anyone else had a similar problem and if a squirter around 40 or 50 cc kit helped.

Maybe a dumb question, but have you gone through the carb and made sure everything is cleaned out, and all the jets and nozzles are actually feeding fuel? Both accelerator pump jets are spraying?

Yeah everything is clean, I checked it twice. I also checked the timing and everything looks good.
I'm going to do a compression test tonight to make sure I'm not chasing a lost cause.

Yeah... exactly!!!!!! I'm starting to re think the timing thing like Skife said. I know my base timing is set, but maybe my total timing is off. I'll have to check that out. Might need lighter springs in the dist. or something.

just a thought but I know many carb issues and be caused by the backfire into the carb. if it has a power valve its most likely toast from the backfire. that would give you the feeling your not getting enough fuel on accel. its not responding to the pedal action and compounding the problem by giving you a "Lean" pop. so your back fire is causing more back fires because the original cause hasn't been addressed

I don't really think its the power valve because; 1) I have switched them out so much, 2) This carb has backfire protection which protects the power valve in the event of a backfire. Its a good thought.

Have you checked the adjustment on the pump bolt? You should get a squirt of fuel as soon as soon as you so much as breath on the linkage.

If you have taken the bowl off you really need to check it carefully.

Did u have to bend the part of the throttle linkage that the bolt rides on when u installed the new 35 accel pump. Could it be not pushing the pump all the way in?

first off, i don't know anything about AMC distributors

I'd check to see if the advance on the distributer is working, make sure all the springs are there and the weights move freely.

Yup. Thats where I'm at right now. I'm going to go through the timing again and check total timing, instead of just base timing.

i had a similar issue when the accelerator screw was turned down to far maybe try backing if off, sounds like your getting too big of a shot of fuel which is what my problem was
