Default S10 Speedometer Odometer Issue

Okay, I've got an 1998 Isuzu Hombre (s10/sonoma). It's a base model, 2.2L 4cyl. manual tranny and the speedometer and odometer have stopped working. This truck is new to me so I assumed that the VSS went bad but when I climbed under the truck to replace it, it's obvious that the VSS has been recently replaced, it's still pretty shiny. Now it could possibly have gone bad again but I'm curious if there's other issues that might cause the problem too. I don't want to waste $50 on a VSS if there's something else wrong.

Also for what it's worth, it looks like this truck was in a light front end collision at some point on the passenger side. There's minor fender damage, headlight damage, and it's have a newer bumper put on it with a few other plastic parts.

In my research, I've run into people recommending to unplug the radio and see if that fixes the problem (because the autovolume thing that some models have) and my radio is VERY dimly lit so it's not working 100% right. I'm going to check that tomorrow. The gauge cluster doesn't seem to be dim, only the stereo display.

I also saw something about the headlight switch but that seems really odd.

Anyone have any other suggestions on what to look at?

if u have a multi meter back probe the 2 wires for the VSS with the ignition key on and spin the driveshaft slowly. see if u get an alternating current from the vss. IIRC u should get a code from a bad vss, and i also think that the speedometer is run off of a pcm output.

Ended up being the radio. The previous owner installed an older model radio in it and it caused all the problems. Removed the radio and the problem went away! It was a cassette deck so I wanted to swap it out anyway!

It's for the Auto volume system. Apparently there is a wire in the harness that runs from the computer to the radio that tells the radio how fast the vehicle is going and to turn the radio up correspondingly. Even though my truck didn't have that option, the wire was still in the harness. The previous owner put in a junk stereo from an earlier model year that didn't have that feature and it pissed off the system. I ended up putting a sony head unit in last night. Not only does the radio sound better but the speedo and odo work now!
