I have one. There are youtube vids of people packing the the tubes with sand so they dont kink. But since tube is expensive, this things gonna destroy a lot of it. I love my jd2. People call those cheap onez "kink o matic".

it works for bumpers and stuff but if your gonna be doing a cage, definately buy a good one. I have this bender and it works alright on light load bearing stuff like bumpers and sliders where if it bends it just messes up you vehicle not kill you.

Most of the pipe bender stuff is here:

Poop Pipe Info! - Great Lakes 4x4. The largest offroad forum in the Midwest

My two cents are this:

The pipe bender, on GOOD, PROPER material is good for making bends up to about 45 degrees, without too much . To go bigger, you usually will need to sand-pack the tubes or other tricks. That way, I was able to get about 65 degrees of bend without distorting the tubes too bad. I built several cages this way. You should design your cage around the angles you can produce, if possible. For example, on a Jeep, design each side to be one piece: From A-pillar floor, come up the dash, angle back to follow windshield, then angle back to form the roofline (still angled upward a bit), behind the b-pillar, angle back down towards the rear corner. Then use straight pieces to connect each side. Lots of cages are done this way.

If you need the cage to cover the rear, then instead of angling down at the b pillar, go straight back, then make a 45 degree bend sideways, and then a second 45, also in that direction. That will create 1/2 of the loop that covers the rear seat. (then the passenger side mail tube makes the other half of the loop) You then run straight stringers from there down to the corners. Again, a lot of rigs do this.

Both of those methods can usually be done keeping all the angles to about 60* or less.

For bumpers, 1-1/4 sch 40 is a nice nice. Looks a touch small on a roll bar some times, its 1.66" diameter. 1-1/2" pipe is 1.90" diameter.

1-1/2" sch 40 A500b is far stronger than a 1.75" HREW tube cage. Its also more dent resistant.

So, its something you *can* use. Its not great, takes a lot of pumps of the handle, its hard to keep your work level to keep track of compound angles, etc.

If you are just doing one cage, maybe see if someone around has a bender that you could go use for one cage. I've done that before too, before I built my present bender.

FWIW, I use DOM and a normal rotary draw bender now, with an air over hydro ram.

Always remember the harbor freight unit is a PIPE bender not a tubing bender. Use the pipe bender for heavy wall pipe. You can buy a used tubing bender, make your parts, and resell the bender. Guys are always looking for used tubing benders.

I think you need to read the link that h aggar posted and learn the difference between pipe and tube. You won't be able to bend tube with the harbor freight bender.

If your going to do it, do it rite and get a tubing bender. You may find someone around you that has one that will lend you a hand for a small fee. I bought a JD2 when I did the roll cage in my jeep. I figure it'll be nice to have later down the road when I do fenders, rock sliders, or other things. Yes its a lot of money but like said you could always sell it and get your money back once you are done with it.

As they said, pipe bender bends pipe, not tube.

The difference are the sizes. pipe is sized funny. The dies need to be tight fitting to the material.

The 1-1/2" die isn't 1.5 inches, its 1.9....
The 1-1/4" die is 1.66 inches.

there aren't any dies inbetween to do 1.75" tube...

Please don't forget that you need a pull point before you make 360* in bends. If you were closer I would help ya out!

at the same time none of my bends are going to be crazy. the worst bend would be my stinger and even then i might just heat it up and bend that around a brake rotor. but other then that nothing is to much worse then like a 35 degree bend.

these are the bumpers i am going off of.... sorry if any typing is messed up my computer i am useing at school is being weird
