It'd be kind of pointless to through weld the shackle mounts in 3/16" steel. If its gonna rip off then it'd tear the steel around the weld on the shackle mount (the welds tensile strength is greater then the steels tensile strength which is around 40,000lbs or so) and it'd do the same even if it were through welded. Also, just because the mounts would have weld on the front and back doesn't mean it'd be any stronger, cause the metal would lose some of its strength the more you weld in that one area. Mine and my buddies are only welded onto the face and they've been yanked on HARD in all directions. In fact, my buddies are 3/4" thick and they're only face welded onto 2"x4"x1/4" tube and one is actually bent and it didn't rip off. Really, the only way through welding the mounts would be any stronger would be if the bumper was made out of tube, and they went through the front and the back.

The Front bumper is HOT! I saw another post askin about a rear one so that makes two of us interested in that.

For the rear bumper would you folks want it to be just a bolt on or have be for cut quarters, like this:

The bumper im designing for the rear, wraps around the sides where the bottom of the quarters are supposed to be and they stick out the side of the Jeep 2" to match the front. Also, its great if you ever end up exo-caging it. It adds protection and you'd have less body panel to destroy!

The bolt on one wouldn't wrap around, it would just match the contour of all the bends in the rear quarter.

also, thanks for the compliment!

Sizematters said he wanted one too and he may lemme design one using his ZJ, but that's still up in the air. Would you want a winch bumper or just a regular one?

I would like to have a rear that wraps around or replaces the lower rear qtr. Most Michigan XJ's have rust in that rear section anyways.

Or what about one like C-Rok 4x4 that covers the rear qtr with plate steel?

Id have to go winch. No point in getting a sexy new bumper if i cant have a winch to go with it!

Ya, my XJ's rear quarters are rotting out, so they're due to be cut right off. I thought about doing that, but if you happened to take a good hit right there, it may bend those plates cause there's no support behind them, and then you're still left with a crushed quarter and a bumper that'd be a bitch to take back off.

True. Im curious to see what you fab up for the rear. I wouldnt mind cutting out the rear qtr to add some real steel in its place. Any drawings of this design or just rolling with it (so to speak)?

I don't have my Big Jeep Plans notebook(lol) with me, which has some rough sketches and dimensions in it, but I do have it all drawn out in AutoCAD, so the next time I get on the computer I'll take a pic of the drawing.

Hmm...maybe. ill decided when I build it to see how much of a pain it is to fully enclose the ends. Theyre probably not gonna be big enough to hold alot of air though and I'd have to pressure test it.

If it plays out right, Ill drop it off tomorrow so you can take it apart and figure out design. How many days would ya need it for?

It'd probably take me 2 days to get the basic design of the bumper and the tie-in brackets.

More curious as to how big the piece going under the rear qtr would be? Similar in size to what you did for the front corner or larger?

Here's a quick drawing I did with some dimensions.

Top and front

Side piece that replaces the bottom of the quarters.
