Default Has anyone ever really read up on Darwin?

In some literature, especially literature opposed to evolution, it is claimed that on his deathbed Darwin rejected evolution and became a Christian. Anyone ever read anything that supports this?

Funny, it was actually brought up in one of my classes, but I am pretty sure the prof. is on an extended acid trip.

i had never heard that one before, i jsut searched snopes and couldnt find anything about it. I would chalk it up to propoganda by the anti evolution crowd .... it seems the perfect tib bit to lure in weak minded folks into listening to the spiel and then the bible thumping. I personally am torn sometimes .... but i sure never heard that darwin death bed confession before.

IIRC Darwin was a devout christian all throughout most of his life. I will have to pull my book out on him, I have not read it in a year. I do know there is some sketchy info on his actual beliefs during his writings. I do remember that his wife had problems with his beliefs and it strained their relationship as she was a devout christian.... I will have to get out my science book, it had a really good mostly unbias section on Darwin and his beliefs.

Given how much he gave up to support his theory, it is highly unlikely that that is true. I suspect that it is propaganda being propagated by the Creationists.

I have nothing against christians (my wife is devout) but it was propaganda that brought this rumor into light. I can't remember exaclty where but on one of the atheist websites I've visited they had a story in regards to this quoting his daughter who was said to be at his deathbed. While the woman who made the claim, no one in the family had even heard of.

Sorry, its late, and maybe I'm reading between the lines.......
I have made an assumption and if you are not bashing my beliefs, I apologize.
I'm just a very proud Christian Red-Neck (God, Family, Country)
and I tend to get a little on edge when someone causes ill will toward my beliefs.
again my apologies.

Jamiesann,.......I would like to talk to you about bible thumping someday.

i have nothing against religion i was confirmed in the luthern church. I believe in god, and belive in allot of science also, thats why i said i was torn. I have no issue with christianty (or most non radical muslims, jews, hindus, etc all the peaceful religions). I wasnt knocking religion, just the means some people go to.

For as many Darwin Stories that you are discussing in your classes, I have been to as many classes counter arguing.
What you want to believe is your buisness, I just happen to know what I believe and would have no problem sharing it with you, "IF YOU ASK", but this is about as forward as I will ever get to "BIBLE THUMPING".

Unless of course you piss me off, then I might wack you over the head with a knock-off version.:tonka: :tonka: :tonka:

Sorry for hijacking the thread, and keep up your discussions, if nothing else, they may open some minds.

I am torn like Jamie but I dont think darwinism and christian beliefs have to be mutually exclusive.
Heres why:
No one knows how long gods days of creation were, so you cant say if the dinosaurs were involved in one of the days, or if the dinosaurs were roaming before adam and eve left the garden.
God could have made creatures and then they evolved to their current state.

I believe that god put all of the animals here on earth during some point in creation and some of the animals have evolved, just as humans continue to evolve and change.
One example of human evolution is that people are a lot taller now than they were even 100 years ago, because of different diet.

....all I can say to that Kerryann, is to research it. If you need the location of resources PM me and I will give you as much information as I can.

One of the things that concerns me most about my friends and fellow countrymen,...we all seem to want to know, or to discuss what we think we know, but we don't seem to make the time to do the real research. (too much hearsay) This includes myself.

Keep going.....

Like thats an unbiased source...

I have heard numerous claims about Darwins religious befiefs but have never been able to verify any of them.

well to, I was just stating what I could to help the argument. If you want to be close minded about it that's fine just find someone else to unleash you're holier than thou venom on.

I would have made the same comment if it was a Christian web site that was quoted. I hardly think that qualifies as "holier than thou venom" but whatever...

if anyones interested in the original question google "Darwin's religious beliefs" and theres plenty written about the subject.

Evolutionism is the biggest blown out of proportion theory ever. I can't beleive they actually teach it as the "only" theory about creation in school.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not an itelligent design sackrider... but there has to be something else to let kids think for themselves *lol*

I will say this. Darwin was a fine scientist. I have read, and believe it to be true as I am a scientist, that Darwin would not make statements that could not be tested and supported. On that note, darwinian evolution / natural selection (changes WITHIN a species) occur and can be observed in small species that reproduce rapidly. No research supports that darwinian evolution was responsible for all species evolving from a single common ancestor. Darwin never said it did, and it is not even a testable hypothesis.

If you consider this, it is completely possible to believe that life on this planet may have been created by something other than evolution (even God) and this would not contradict the observation that changes can occur within a species due to natural selection.
