Default D30/Yukon axles strength

I've got a WT D30 in the front of my '76 CJ. Bought the housing and put all new Yukon shafts in it last year. Just wondering what this setup would handle power wise?
The reason for asking, is that there's a sand drag even this year that stipulates (2) DOT tires must be used, so I'm thinking about running paddles in the rear, and some 32x14 Boggers in the front. Just a little nervouse about running a heavy tire in those conditions.....

By the looks of your avatar I think small and light front tires not big and heavy, I have had more trouble with ring and pinions than axles on my dana 30s

My concern would also be the R&P, it's not exactly what you'd want to be the weak point since taking it out royally f's you over.

A sand specific AT might be your best choice. They would be lighter than the boggers and they wouldn't dig either at the top end. Think about the desert traks, they work well because they don't dig after you launch, they just ride on the middle part allowing you to steer under power.

Best thing to do is to pick a set and be early for the test and tune.

I run 14.50 Desert Trak's in the front now. The problem is, to run this event in the two classes I fit in, you have to run (2) DOT tires. So if I run paddles in the rear, I'm stuck running something DOT in the front, and I'm not buying something new just for one event.
Sounds like best bet, is to find something smaller/skinnier/lighter in the front I guess then.

What gears are you running? Most of the failures I've heard of have been 4.56 and up.

Just keep the front tires in the air the whole lenght of the track and you'll be fine.

Fuck it, run it til it blows up then upgrade. I wouldn't throw any more money at the 30 myself.

No one said you had to run DOT tires with good tread, right? There's always someone on here trying to sell some worn out A/T tires. Find some that are suitably worn off and run those.

I hate to hurt it for 1 event though. I don't think it will ever give out in the sand. We've put A LOT of power through stock D30's (and still do) in the sand with no problems.

That's exactly what I'll probably do. Find something small and worn out to run for that weekend.

You could go to the local junkyard and be give for free a couple get to town tires "donut spares" Small,light and cheap. :)

I have some 15x10 and some 15x8 rims that I can choose from. I've got my regular 15x10 steel wheels with some 32" tires that I run on the street, and a set of 15x10's with 33x14 Boggers. Just didn't know how the front would hold up to launches off the transbrake on the bottle with a heavy rim/tire combo.
That's why I'm thinking of using the 15x8 rims and finding the smallest tire I can go with.

i have one 32" bfg mt 15" rim thats about 1/2 tread.

i also have two 33" bfg at tires that are pretty close to bald (free)
