MAN LUCKY TO BE ALIVE AFTER UNUSUAL CRASH
By: Jamie Nash, Courier staff
12/05/2005

A Conroe man, just 3 days from his 20th birthday is lucky to be alive to celebrate after crashing his truck approximately 1000 from where it left the roadway near Patton Village on Sunday morning.

Justin Herbert, 19, of Conroe, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, failure to control speed and minor in possession of alcohol, according to Roman Forest Police Officer Eli Rivera.
The wreck was reported by witnesses at 1:47 a.m.. They told police Herbert was traveling at a high rate of speed eastbound on FM 242 when he ran through the stoplight at the southbound feeder road intersection in front of the Flying J truck stop. They said he continued across the overpass and again failed to stop at the northbound feeder road, where FM 242 ends.
The 2004 red Chevrolet Silverado Z-71off-road extended cab truck somehow missed hitting the large highway department sign with a left arrow which was directly in its path. It continued eastbound, tearing down several small trees became airborne, crossed the railroad tracks, and landed in the trees and brush on the other side. Officers from Patton Village and Woodbranch Village also responded.
According to police, the vehicle's speedometer indicated the rate of speed at last impact was 64 miles per hour. There was no indication the truck's brakes were applied while it was still on the pavement. Amazingly, Herbert walked away from the accident. There were multiple beer cans and a bottle of flavored vodka in the truck.
The railroad was notified of the truck's location as a precaution, despite the truck not being directly on the tracks. Multiple wrecker services responded and attempted to determine the best course of action. Initially, they tried to pull the truck back to the feeder, but were unsuccessful. They had to go around to the road on the east side of the railroad tracks and pull it out of the trees, since it was much closer to that road when it landed. It took about two hours to carefully extract the truck.

If you're going to chop a photo for a story at least make sure the truck is a Z 71 extended cab like the story said
